In Safe Mode, choose c: prompt and type bootlog.txt/more. A log will show up identifying which device drivers are failing to load. Replace those drivers or reinstall Windows from the CD

You say a new pentium motherboard, have you
also included a new CPU ?
If its an AMD k6 faster than 350 MHZ then you
need to download a win95/8 patch from the AMD
website.

the patch is only for Win95 OSR2. you don't need it for 98.

Sounds like a problem with video card driver. Because you have never had a complete booyup into windows, windows has not had a chance to install drivers for new motherboard resources, including pci bus, which may keep a pci video card from working properly. when windows tries to load video drivers, it locks up. To fix it, boot to safe mode, right click on empty desktop and select PROPERTIES. select SETTINGS tab, click ADVANCED button, ADAPTER tab, and CHANGE button. Click NEXT, select DISPLAY A LIST etc., select SHOW ALL DEVICES, select SHOW ALL HARDWARE, select (STANDARD DISPLAY TYPES in left pane and STANDARD PCI GRAPHICS ADAPTER in right pane. click NEXT. After your adapter is changed to standard yuor computer should boot into windows (16 colors!) after all new motherboard resources are loaded, windows should detect your video card and install it. Good luck, Al
