Old Win98 Not Booting Properly

My friend's Windows 98 computer will not get past the loading part. It automatically goes to the Safe Mode screen. When we try to start in ANY mode, It'll go to the Windows loading screen, and then shut off. It flashes a screen for a VERY brief moment that says something like 'gx(With some numbers).exe cannot be loaded.' It says something about a sound card, too, while I'm starting with Command Prompt. Is it a hardware problem, or could it be a virus?
Obviously it would help if you could be not quite so vague
If a virus is suspected, try scanning for such
Otherwise, take a look at the startups with msconfig and disable anything that doesn't belong. Running Ad-aware & Spybot is advisable also to check for other kinds of malware
Hardware problems may be reflected in Device Manager - check the soundcard's entry there

You should be posting the specs for the problem machine, not the machine that you are posting with.

... ideally - but I'd settle for the actual error messages (rather than 'something like')
