Comment:

I have an old computer that I have put in a new hard drive. Now it no longer recognizes the cd rom drive. I reset the cmos to default so all it recognizes is the hard drive as Primary Master and has none as Primary Slave. I believe I need to change the setting but don't know where to start

Try setting the jumper on the cd rom to Slave.

They come from the factory with jumper set to Master.

Do as Seawatch suggested and then change all IDE channels to "auto". Use the arrow keys to move to each channel, then page up or down to change the values. Make sure you save the new settings (usually F10).

It's possible your older computer doesn't have the AUTO option in cmos. If so NONE is OK as the bios doesn't need to see the cdrom, only the OS drivers need see it.

As suggested above, check the jumpers and connection. Also, can you connect it as secondary master instead of primary slave? If you do it that way, make sure the secondary IDE controllers are enabled in cmos.
