the computer is made by a company called boardrunner, the company that made the disply adapter is chromatic resarch(they are out of business)I installed an m2gfx.drv and it shows no conflicts. When I check to see if there is a better driver it says the one I am using is the best one. it is an mpact2.
my problem is when I change it to 256 colors and restart it goes back to 16.
when I went to troubleshooter this is what they told me to try:
Is the BIOS for your display adapter out of date?
The BIOS for your display adapter may not allow a resolution higher than 640 × 480 with 16 colors.Contact the display adapter manufacturer to find out whether there is an updated video BIOS for your display adapter that supports higher resolution.
can anyone please tell me how to do that?os=win 98
its a pentium3/2 mainboard 6abx3If there is anymore info that is needed please let me know.
thank you!

I would suggest buying a better (newer) graphics card on the second-hand market.
You can get a very powerful VGA card now very cheaply and it is more likely to still be supported by the manufacturer.
Also, you would find a 16 bit setting much higher quality.

Jex's advice seems good to me. But you might first try here to get a driver:
This site may enable you to find a later driver. Of course, no driver can give you more than your 'Chromatic Research' board is designed for.

Thank you, It worked good before I had to reformat because of a cluster problem.
But when I reinstalled windows lost my drivers, found them but know they just don't seem to be working.
