I had been running Win95 with Office 2000 installed. I purchased a larger hard drive and installed Win98. Since I couldn't install 98 over 95, I made my old HD a slave thinking I could simply create a shortcut to the Office programs on D: When I try to start one of the programs (Word, Excel, etc.), I get the message: need Installer to run the program. I looked and there is a folder named Installer with the serial number and the icons on the D drive. Is there something I am missing or should I just re-install the Office 2000 program? Thanks to all.

Your path statement is probably going to look for all the Office files on your C drive.

Best thing you can do is boot to the old drive (after disconnecting the new one), uninstall Office, and then power down.

Reconnect the new drive and install Office on it. You can still keep your data on D though. :)

You need to have the software installed on the operating system you are runnin. Simply having the programs on the other hard drive won't do much good. (sort of like copying a game CD onto your hard drive, unless you run the install, having the files on your PC won't make the game play)

When you install Office, it adds a bunch of entries into Window's registry.

When you isntalled Office, it made all the registry changes to the Windows95 registry.

Since you are using 98 now, it has a new registry, with none of those additions already in it. So your Windows 98 doesn't recognize it, and doesn't know you already have it.

You really have two options, either reinstall Office, or swap your hard drives, keep Windows 95, and use the new hard drive simply for storage space.

Persoanlly, I'd reinstall Office.

Also, once you have everything working, I'd copy all the data files (*.doc, *.xls, and other office files) as well as all your MP3's, text, and other stuff you've saved and put them all on the new drive, then wipe the old one clean, and move them back. (It's always best to put your data on a different drive than your Operating System, in case one crashes)

That way, you aren't losing a ton of space with the old Win95 files that aren't going to be used anymore. But that's just my personal preference.

I'd reccommend re-installing office to take care of the issue you are having!

Thanks to Jennifer and Dave for the quick reply--what you said does make sense now that I think about it, duh! I'll re-install. Thanks again. Wick...
