Just initiated DSL service and use Yahoo for email and Explorer 6.0 as a browser. Ever since the DSL was activated; pop ups appear even when I’m not on line. Use Yahoo and Google pop up killers but believe they are probably active only when using that particular service which I’m not as I’m not on line when the pop ups occur (most notable “on line poker”). I use Panicware PopUp Stopper and SureClean at system start. Believe problem may lie in my registry; have not use a registry cleaner. Any ideas as to cause of problem and solution?

At the top of this forum page is a link to various security software - it is recommended that you download, install, update & run Ad-aware & Spybot. If those don't resolve the problem, post back.

Yeah, I *meant* "top of The forum page" - it's on several of the 'main' M$ OS forums

Actually, I have had both Spybot & Spyware Blaster installed for a long time; run @ least 2x per day even before this issue; however prior to the DSL hook-up I never had off line pop ups.

That would have been worth mentioning in your initial message - still, try Ad-aware as well. It's beneficial to run both (updated), for better coverage.
If that doesn't help, might be time to break out HiJackThis! and have the log analyzed - sometimes a bit of a process, although there are a couple of online analyzers

Ad-Aware would have been my first recommendation.
Larry, let's also talk about the firewall you are using. ADSL is always online.

Rimfire,
Thanks for the info re: DSL always being on line. As a rookie, I certainly didn't know this. I installed a Belkin wireless network; they were pretty specific about disabling all firewalls when using their router SO I disabled my McAfee firewall which I used to enable with startup - think this could be the source of the problem; if so any ideas as to what I should be using?
Thanks again, Lar

I don't know why the instructions said that. I don't recall my Netgear one asking that. I trust that you enabled NAT and SPI. These should make it difficult for a hacker to access your computers.
The hardware firewall won't help with malware like a software one will. It will see the traffic comming from your computer and dutifully pass it on. A software firewall checks if the program has permission brfore allowing it access to the network or internet. As you can see, a software firewall may seem superfluous but is still useful.
When reenabling the firewalls, remember to add the router and the addresses of other computers on your network to the trusted zone. Failure to do this will result is denied connections when transfering files between the computers. This usually involves adding the IP range you use.
