I bought s scanner for the cars. It came with a CD and said it would work with WIN98. After I installed it I could not get any place with IE6. I uninstalled it with no luck. Old Netscape works, Netscape mail works, OE works. No matter what I enter IE does nothing. I have gone thru the process of setting up a LAN with no success. This may be a key to the problem. I used the wizard to set up a LAN and go this at the end, cannot config the proxy server with your account info. The parameter is incorrect. If I try to work from IE options and set up the LAN when I click OK nothing happens. It just sits there and I have close the window. I also have a clone computer set up pretty much the same and it still works fine. I have used tools, system and file checks to see if both computers are the same and they are. Thanks in advance for any help.

Apparently the scanner program started all this? Sounds like you've spent a lot of time working on the problem; so now it might be worth the effort of calling your ISP support desk to see if they can walk you through all your settings.

Try Internet Explorer Repair tool.

Programs>accessories>System tools>system information. Click the Tools Tab.

There is a faster way there but I can't recall the command to run it from the RUN box.

What version of IE are you running? Have you kept IE Updated. If not IE6 SP1 you can get updates through Windows Update.

Contrary to popular belief all Updates are still available. Use the shortcut from the IE Tools button, once you get it running.

Post back with any errors on IE Repair.

This link should work.

I'm running IE6. I tried the service pack, but it wants to connect to the net and can't. The people in India that answer questions for Verizon say, they do not sopport WIN98. It has to be something that interfaces between IE6 and the net. I have been looking high and low for the Verizon install CD to redo it. BUT, come to think of it, the clone does not have the Verizon programs on it, thinking to me self....Thanks for you answers so far. How can I see the registry? I may be able to see something that is not the same between the two.

Here is something I found today. Remember I have a clone, almost, anyhow. From tools, sys info, Looking at both it says they have IE6, yada, yada and they match, but. On the clone, on the left, it lists, Sys Info, Hardware Resources, Componets, Software enviroment, Iternet Exployer. Now on the one that isn't working all except IE is not listed. Maybe this will trip someones trigger. Thanks again for any answers.

Network problems require that you remove everything except your logon choice, reboot and then re-install only what is required to get the job done. This will require the Windows 98 installation CD - IE6 is a seperate issue at this point.

You didn't mention how you uninstalled IE6 in the first post - that's not supposed to be possible. Perhaps a better explaination of how you pulled off the impossible might help me understand the damages.

IE6 installation files are available on CD. Office, Norton, and quite a few other CDs have all the files needed to install and/or re-install IE6 as many times as you want. I prefer to install it twice just to cover all the bases since there is no harm done. Try to install it from the hard drive for best results.

Confusing post number 5 sounds like you need a lesson in proper english and a reinstallation of Windows, but then I'm not really sure. It sounds like you are missing some standard system tools?

I have done that, both the coumputer that won't let IE work as well as the clone match with no errors. I just hate to give in.

Thanks for your help.

Another clue. Going to the dos prompt, when I enter 'ipconfig/all >c:ipcfg.txt' and read the files both computers make I find all the information that is in winipcfg on the clone, which IE6 does work, but on the one that don't there is no information. To add, Outlook email works as well as Netscape browser and Netscape mail, it is Internet Explorer that don't. Thanks to all that are taking the time to read these posts, Mike
