OE won't connect to ANY mail server

This is a very strange problem. I have been able to use Outlook Express in the past, but now everytime I try to check email it gives me an error as if I was not connected to the Internet. I use EarthLink and the server is correctly entered as pop.earthlink.net. I can access web sites without a problem, but whenever I try to check email it says it cannot connect to the server. I tried changing the server name to the IP address (207.217.120.220), and just for the heck of it I tried other pop servers; mail.earthlink.net, incoming.verizon.net, pop.mail.yahoo.com, mail.whatever.com and it doesn't connect to ANY server! It acts as if it's offline, but it is not. I have tried removing my mail account and then creating a new one, using all the default settings, but that account did the same thing! I have tried uninstalling Internet Explorer and then re-installing it, but that had no effect on the problem. Do you have any idea why Outlook Express won't connect to ANY mail server? Any help would be much appreciated!

Your OE is corrupt. Uninstall it, then reinstall it.

I'd suggest you call Earthlink, have them walk you through your settings to make sure they are correct. I used to use Earthlink & twice they changed the settings without notifying me to make the necessary changes on my end & I was unable to get mail I no longer use Earthlink, got tired of that happening!

In Windows XP, click Start then Control Panel. In the Control Panel, double click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
In Add or Remove Programs, select Windows components. Uncheck the Outlook Express box. Click OK and then reboot.
Repeat this, but this time check the OE box to reinstall it.
