Odd desktop problem

Comment:
After booting up, my desktop appears from the side of the monitor and doesnt quite fit the screen. Can anyone help me with this, or is it normal?

Sue, Your monitor should have adjustment buttons either on the front or back. Try adjusting the horizontal to move the screen so that it fills the screen. No, your screen's appearance isn't normal. Your monitor manual should have instructions to correct the problem.

Hi Sue Fiddle around with the controls on the front of your monitor, till you get the desktop screen centred. Use the arrowed buttons. If the font and icons are too large, then you could go to Control Panel / Display and click Settings. Adjust the screen area to say 800 x 600 - this is the default setting for most computers. Run colours at 16 bit High Color, that's a nice middle-of-the-road setting. Krystyna

Thanks for replying, I am running at 800x600, and have 'twiddled' with knobs on monitor. But, cant get rid of black line at the bottom. And the desktop still slides on from the side!!

Does your monitor have an on screen menu display, or do you just have a few knobs with + and - to work with. Did you also look on the back of the monitor for height and width adjusters ?

I wonder exactly what you mean by "slides on from the side".
If you mean that you have to wait for the picture to move across, then this coupled with lack of full vertical scan (it scans top to bottom) sounds a lot like the monitor is faulty. Can you borrow one to try?
I've experience with TV repairs and realise the difficulty of trying to explain a screen effect in words. Often when I've viewed a faulty TV it seems much different to the customer's description.
