Hello,
System specs:
Processor, AMD Athlon XP 1800+, 1.53 GHZ
RAM, 256MB DDR
Motherboard, Asus (A7N8X Delux)
OS, Win98I just built this computer yesterday, and I have a problem with the audio on my Asus A7N8X Delux motherboard.
The motherboard came with a support CD, containing drivers for audio, "NVIDIA nForce Driver".
In the motherboard manual it says to copy files from "Win98" on the Windows CD to a folder on the hard drive called "Win98SRC", and to direct the driver installation program to that folder for installing the driver files needed from Win98 CD.
I did everything it said, but still it sort of hangs at the beginning, and can't find several files in "Win98SRC", but then proceeds to go through this long process of installing "Microsoft Audio components", which it appears to do twice (though I'm not sure if it's repeating the same process there or a similar one).
Still no audio. The "Nvidia audio" hardware profile has a question mark beside it, and when I try to reinstall or update the driver, windows either has an error (Rndll32), or the computer simply installs the same driver again, and the audio still won't work.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Several other devices integrated into the motherboard are also having difficulties, including one of the onboard LAN ports (the Nvidia LAN port).
I suspect it's all to do with the driver files that can't be found in the "Win98SRC" folder, I don't believe it to be a hardware problem.
Thanks!

Just a thought...
Have you gone to 'control panel' 'add/remove programs' 'windows setup' and installed 'multimedia' components ?

Try the drivers from the Asus site instead.

Neither of those worked either. There must be some files that can be downloaded somewhere, because Win98 doesn't have them, and the downloaded drivers from the Asus website doesn't have them, and the CD that came with the motherboard doesn't have them.
This is crazy!
I even formatted my harddrive again, just to completely clear everything, and it's giving me the same routein. But thanks for trying to help. :'(

Look here:
http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
After you download what you need, uninstall all the previous sound software on your computer and then install the downloaded software.

"Audio drivers will not install on the following nForce2 products: ASUS A7N8X and Chaintech 7NJS. Please use the drivers that come with these products to enable audio functionality."
I clicked "Platform/nForce Drivers --> Unified Driver Package --> Windows ME/ 98 SE"
That audio package won't work with my motherboard. :\ And, the software that came with my motherboard won't work either!
Now what?

I may have to resort to that.
I emailed technical support on the Asus website, and they haven't gotten back with me yet. I hope they can suggest something, because it seems like there's no where online that's got the info.
I'm starting to think that maybe it's Windows 98. The motherboard says it supports Win98, but maybe there are some files missing or something that's causing this to happen.
I do have Win98SE, but the software came with my Gateway computer, and I don't think it will install on a non-Gateway machine, at least that's what I've heard.
Thanks anyway!

Just install Windows XP
i have the same motherboard and it works fine(nice sound)
After installing Windows XP download the latest nforce driver package from asus and NOT from nvidia because some driver are just in a beta status.Succes!

Hi, _Molly_.
Did you ever get this problem fixed/what did you do? I see exactly the same thing with my new A7N8X and Win98. I haven't seen any other fixes, either.
Thanks,
Iain.

I promised myself if I got this mother(board) working I would post my solution on the net so that I can save anyone else from pulling their hair out. It turns out that ASUS had made some changes on their board but didnīt include these changes on the driver CD that ships out with it so the drivers for sound, networking, etc. donīt load.
The new driver is on the ASUS website and the version number is 1.6. The one that ships is 2.0 so when you install the new drivers windows recommends that you keep your current drivers since it has a higher version number in fact the lower version number is newer. Replace the drivers by selecting to not keep current drivers (ie.press no to all). This should solve most of your problems(I had to do this 2 times by the way before the drivers would take.It must ask for the Win98cd for it to work). P.S. donīt forget to create the win98src folder like it says in the manual(pg.73) because the new drivers still wonīt load the files from the win98 cd. You have to type in the correct path also which is c:\win98src. Hope this helps many! Good luck!

Hi, el.
Thanks for the suggestion. I downloaded the latest drivers for my rev. 1.06 board - 1.16 they're labelled on the Asus web site. Win98src folder was in place as well. I still see the same problems - looking for ks.sys and wdmaudio.??? and the installation fails. I think I'm going to get a RMA for this board, and replace it with the Abit nF2 one.
- Iain.
