I ran disk defrag and when the computer was next reset it came up NTLDR is missing and you can do nothing with it....help please

To eliminate the NTLDR message ,boot the computer with a Win 98 SE diskette and at dos prompt:
fdisk /mbr
The NT boot sector must be changed if you wish to install a dos based system like Windows 9X or ME.Good luck.

I'm using 98.....the only thing the computer says is NTLDR is missing press any key to continue.....but when you do you get the same message....at no time do I see hit F2 for setup to change anything.....

You need to reset your BIOS. This can be done in one of two ways.
1. There should be an option to set the bios to original configuration, this is not the same as the default option.
2. If that doesn't work then use the MB jumper for clearing the CMOS. Look in your manual to find it.Did you used to have Win 2k,NT, XP on this computer? Or is this a dual booting OS?

Petit Jean, bill,
In the absence of any background information posted by ETFIII about this PC's past OS (if it had any), do you have any hypothesis as to why this "NTLDR missing" error happened in the first place in a PC running Win98 after the Defrag?
I am just curious to know:-)

I seriously doubt that we have been given all the pertinent information. As we all know, there is no way that running defrag can cause this error message.

Updating from Win 9X to Win XP after hard drive cloning(copying content of a smaller hard drive to a new and bigger hard drive)will also result in a failure to install the Win XP with the NTLDR error message.
The disk defrag mentioned was not necessarily done from within Windows.

Yes I am curious also why this happened. That is why I asked the question if Petit Jean had either a dual booting OS or it it was originally partitioned with NT.

According to http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/N/NTLDR.html
"Short for NT Loader, a program loaded from the hard drive boot sector that displays the Microsoft Windows NT startup menu and helps Windows NT load.
Often a user will see the message "NTLDR is Missing" after attempting to install Windows 2000 or Windows XP, or upgrade a Windows 95-based or Windows 98-based computer to Windows 2000 or Windows XP. The message appears after the first reboot. This occurs only if Windows 95 or 98 has been installed on a drive with the FAT32 file system. To correct the problem, the user must boot the computer with a Windows 95 or 98 Startup diskette or another bootable diskette with sys.com on it. Then, at the "A:\>" prompt, type "sys c:" and press "enter." A "System Transferred" prompt should appear and then the user must reboot the computer without the diskette."
