I have an Dual boot win98 & winXP pro...
first i instaled an win 98 on C: and then i instaled WIN XP on D:
and everything worked just fine for cupple of months ...then i decided u upgrade my bios so i did it but when i restarted the machine and then it just says NTLDR is missing....so i did a little bit of net reading and tryed everything that i could understand :

first i tryed to boot with bootdisk of win98 and then type an
fdisk /MBR
and it didnt work so i did more reading and ind something about inserting win XP CD and seleccting an REPAIR option and:im dooing copy paste thing

Your best bet is to use the Recovery Console to setup/repair your mbr so that you
>can boot into either operating system.
>
>You will need to boot up with your WinXP CD and follow these steps:
>
>Choose the 'Repair' an existing installation.
>You will be asked to choose which windows installation you want to repair(the WinXP
>Recovery Console will see both the Xp and 2000 installations)
>Type in your Administrator password.
>
>Follow these steps:
>
>1) Type fixboot, answer (Y)es
>2) CD \, press enter.(this takes you to the root drive)
>
>Type and enter thes commands on at a time:
>
>3) attrib -h ntldr
>4) attrib -s ntldr
>5) attrib -r ntldr
>6) attrib -h ntdetect.com
>7) attrib -S ntdetect.com
>8) attrib -R ntdetect.com
>
>In steps 9 and 10, X is the letter of your CD-Rom drive.
>
>9) copy X:\I386\ntldr C:\
>10) copy X:\I386\ntldr.COM C:\
>
>Answer yes each time the computer asks to overwrite the existing file. Type exit
>to close
>the repair console and reboot your computer. You should now be able to boot into
>whichever
>O\S you choose.
>
but it didnt work i belive coz it was an dual boot Win 2000 & Win XP
solution....

Make sure that the BIOS settings are configured to boot from drive A: . Put the Windows 98 Startup Disk in drive A: and start the computer. At the prompt (A:\>) enter the command sys C: . When a "System Transfered" prompt appears remove the disk from the A: drive and restart the computer.

HOW TO: Edit the Boot.ini File in Windows XP

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=289022

I thought that WIN98 was installed on drive C: and XP on drive D: . Are they both on the same partition? Are the drives formated as NTFS or FAT32?

ok they where on diferent partitionsd but when i did bootcfg /rebuilt and then add i added an win 98se and it puts it on D: instead of C: dont know why it never ask me wich drive i will use for newly created win 98 se boot so now im trying to edit c:boot.ini file but dont know what exacly to change there so i will put it here

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="win 98SE" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
c:\="Microsoft Windows"

ok that was an report of type boot.ini
so what has to be changed there so the windows can see my real win 98 on c: instead of D:

Specifying the Default Operating System for Startup

If you have more than one operating system on your computer, you can set the operating system that you want to use as the default one for when you start your computer:
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the operating system that you want to start when you turn on or restart your computer.
Select the Display list of operating systems for check box, and then type the number of seconds for which you want the list displayed before the default operating system starts automatically.

To manually edit the boot options file, click Edit. Microsoft strongly recommends that you do not modify the boot options file (Boot.ini), because doing so may render your computer unusable.

Windows XP users

Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:
copy ntdetect.com c:

Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Got this from here

That is interesting. I couldn't find any examples of a boot.ini file with Windows XP and Windows 98. It looks like all you need under [operating systems] to represent WIN98 is C:\="Microsoft Windows".
