check to make sure that both disks are the same opperating system. if the boot disk was from windows 98 second edition and the laptop is 1st edition or the other way around it won't work.

NTLDR is a file that is placed in the c: root directory when Windows 2000 and Windows nt is loaded.

Is it when you boot from the floppy that you get this error? If so, it means the floppy was formated on an NT/2K machine. If it is the hard drive that is doing this, it means that NT/2000 was at one time installed on the HD.
My understanding that this is happening on a boot floppy. What you need to do is do a FULL FORMAT and not a QUICK FORMAT on the floppy. Then create your Win98 startup disk.
But if it is the harddrive that is doing this, it could be a problem with how the original laptop was setup. I have installed Win 9x on machines, then installed Winnt on the same machine, creating a dual boot system. I then edit the BOOT.INI so that the Win 9x starts up immediately. As far as the user is concerned, they have Win 9x. If needed, I can edit one text file and the user then has Windows NT. All their files remain on the computer but their OS changes. If the BOOT.INI gets toasted, the boot process does not know where NTLDR is at and can't start. Could your machine had been set up this way?
