NTKERN.VXD Corrupted

Comment:

I've been reading all the responses to the NTKERN.VXD problem and appreciate all the effort everyone has gone to to describe
the solution in detail.

My problem started when I loaded the drivers from an HP Scanjet onto my system. I had the exact same 13 VXD files damaged. I re-loaded Windows 95 OSR2.1 and replaced them all. I still get the NTKERN.VXD corrupted. But, I can't even get to Windows to install the updated driver - I get a system exception. Is there any way to download a NTKERN.VXD file directly and install it without
getting into Windows and loading the updated
driver? Thanks.

The best thing to do is go into windows in safe mode, then control panel\settings\add-remove software, and remove the USB. Then you can get back into windows.

ntkern.vxd is a part of vmm32.dll. It does not and will not exist as a separate file on the hdd. The only way to recreate vmm32.vxd is to boot to the dos prompt, delete
c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd, and reinstall windows on top of itself. Try it- it works.

Suz,

I'm in the same boat...NTKERN.VXD is damaged (or at wrong version). As was VPICD.VXD and VXDLDR.VXD but found original for last two on "MASTER CD" supplied by OEM in \BU\D\WIN95.DAT\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32 and copied them on top of "damaged" versions.

Contrary to previous response above, NTKERN.VXD is a real entry in my system in "WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32" directory.

Still haven't found replacement for NTKERN.VXD, but several responses found on WEB have recommended uninstalling USB support either via ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS on WINDOWS CONTROL PANEL, or running something like "USBSUPP.EXE" or "OEMUSB.EXE" from DOS prompt. I would advise checking with your OEM before running either.

The genesis for this problem is a mystery. My problem started after SCANDISK, DEFRAG, and running a FREEWARE program that "wiped" all the unused space on HDD clean (can't be restored/read), then attempting reboot.

Haven't been able to find definitive solution on WEB. Will probably call OEM for assistance.

For those of you with the ntkern.vxd problem, this is what worked for me. I was unable to get into windows or even safe mode. After numerous re-installs and other attempts to fix the problem I decided to move the ntkern.vxd out of the C:\windows\system\vmm32 directoy to my temp directory to see what would happen. By doing this it allowed me to at least boot into windows where I can then follow the advice that is given all over the web to correct the problem. Also you might try the combination of deleting the vmm32.vxd and the ntkern.vxd as well. This worked for me in a second scenario too. Hope this will work for those of you who cannot even get into windows!

PROBLEM:

On the re-boot following reinstallation of Windows 95, you get the following message:

"A device that is specified in the SYSTEM.INI file is damaged.

It may be needed to run Windows.

You may need to run the Windows setup program again. If the file is included in another software
package, you may need to reinstall the software that uses this file.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\filename.VXD."

NOTE! IF you are just getting and error message for NTKERN.VXD follow steps 1-3

1. Go to START; Settings; Control Panel; Add/Remove Programs.

2. In the list, double click on USB Supplement for OSR2.

3. Click YES to restart the system.

NTKERN.VXD is contained in usbsupp.exe. Running usbsupp.exe solves the problem of the error message "A device file specified in SYSTEM.INI is damaged..........C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32\NTKERN.VXD" I have the file usbsupp.exe on disk if you need it and have problems finding it.

If you cannot get the cd rom up, try
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX /D:MSCD000
from the dos prompt. This should allow your system to recognize your cd rom.

I can get into Windows fine but some programs

In 'device manager' I have the yellow exclamation mark over 'processor support'.

Double-clicking this gives:- Device status

"The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (Code2.)
To fix, click Update Drive to update the device driver"

I have done this - but problem persists.

My system:- Windows98,350P2,128M ram,ATI all-in-wonder PRO video card, SoundBlaster Gold sound card.

Any ideas?

I recently installed Win 98 OSR 2 onto a computer previously using Win 98 OSR 1 which caused numerous problems, one of them being Ntkern.vxd and enable.vxd, neither of which can be find. This Pentium III has a problem with loading Ntkern.vxd and as such USB doesn't work and because of this we can't use a USB scanner. Are these files part of the USB support and if so where can I get them. Anyone got any ideas please !!. Any help much appreciated.

1. You need your Windows CD-ROM.
2. To get "ntkern.vxd" look in Win98_48.cab (in the win98 directory)
3. Copy the file to both C:\WINDOWS\ and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\
-----------
Windows 95 may be different, but all you need to do is do a file search for ntkern.vxd on the Win95 directory on your CD-ROM using the "CONTANING TEXT" option not the "named" option (it wont show up).
--------
Let me know if this solves your problems. :)

MY PROBLEM:
Device manager shows a yellow exclamation mark by Processor Support".

REASON GIVEN:
"The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (Code2.)"

PROPOSED RESOLUTION:
"Click Update Driver to update the device driver".

RESPONSE AFTER UPDATE ATTEMPT:
"The best driver Windows found is already installed for this device."
(Driver location: c:\windows\inf\updsys.inf).
The exclamation mark remains !!

Fortunately, I am experiencing NO adverse effects whatsoever from the above. My PC is running great. Even so, I don't like when things don't work as expected, and would like an answer and a working resolution. In my case, I have no reason to believe that NTKERN.VXD is actually corrupted.

My previous experiences in resolving unexplained exclamation marked entries was to just "Remove" the rogue entry and then let Windows detect and re-install the device at boot-up. This worked fine in the past, but there are no guarantees. And, because proper Processor Support is so critical (no kidding, Charlie), I'm leary - especially after reading earlier messages in this log. Some of the poor souls reporting similar sounding problems now have vegetables for PCs. I don't need that grief just for the sake of removing an unexplained question mark.

Think I'll leave well enough alone for now until some higher authority resolves the issue. But I'll be watching.

Good luck to all.

I can then change my drive to C:, but when I try to change to D: it comes up with invalid drive letter. ANY IDEAS?

Anyway the system works but i'm not able to copy/paste i'm not able to run Internet Explorer, i'm not able to send mails through Outlook, i'm not able to shift icons and at the system startup, a ms prompt asks me to reistall the program.
Where can i find a safe copy of that ***king file????

First of all... the most common reason for this error is RAM on a board that doesn't support it. Second of all is ANY other thing installed on a board that doesn't support it. Lots of boards are proprietary, meaning that they don't care what doesn't work on them. Either use some of the kernel fixes listed above, remove the offending devices, upgrade the BIOS, or disable some of the functionality in device manager of the thing that caused it(if possible.) No fix can be used across the board. All manufacturers are different. Windows operates screwy with all vendors.

I have never reformatted or reinstalled windows because of this error. Buck up, Windows is actually fun!!

This is a follow-up to my posting of 11-15-99 "NTKERN.VXD corrupted":

After trying to update drivers, etc., I just couldn't get rid of the exclamation mark next to Processor Support. I finally decided to just leave well enough alone because everything was working OK, and because the horror stories posted in the forum were too scary.

I went about my business and actually forgot about the exclamation mark. Would you believe, the next time I checked..... it was GONE !!! I did nothing (consciously) to correct the problem, but apparently something I did affected it. I'm glad it's gone, but I have no clue what action on my part did the trick. I often run various system utilities to keep things "clean" and up to date, but I'm not sure if any of the utilities that I ran fixed it. I wish I had something more specific to offer.

In my case at least, I think this particular exclamation mark was a false alarm - probably some programmer's error that has us all chasing our tails. I don't think it effects the PC's performance or causes lockups, etc. If it came back for me and everything else was OK, I'd just grin & bear it, rather than do something to truly corrupt my system while trying to remove it.

If your PC's running OK, forget about it and have a beer.

I too had the same problems described here, and solved them once and for all :)

Here's my "short" story:

In my Device Manager, I was getting the error: "The NTKERN.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (Code2.)" I saw this error on my keyboard, processor support and USB port. It wasn't causing me trouble until I installed and Network card and THAT then had the same message!

I tried all the fixes noted above, removing the drivers and reinstalling them, reinstalling Winblows, ... everthing I could think of. Then, thinking it was a hardware problem, i decided to upgrade (I had a 200MMX and it was about time anyway). So, I bought a new Tyan 133Mhz board with a PIII600 "flip-chip" (socket 370) and 128MB 133Mhz ram (all for $450). I installed all the equipment, using the same HDD, video card, etc. When I booted up.... BAM! SAME FRICKING PROBLEM! I couldn't believe it!

So, after I calmed down ;), I backed up my Windows directory and any saved game info (and personal pics, documents, etc..) to another directory and deleted all the info on the C:\ drive. I made a copy of the Win98 Second Edition to the D:\backup\win98_se directory and proceeded to do a fresh install of Win98.

Problem solved!! All of my ports, keyboard, nic, modem and processor support work PERFECTLY.

I've always been hesitant to do a "fresh" install of Win98, but actually, it feels pretty good. I had soooo much crap on my old drive. Sure it took a little time to reinstall my current played games and my saved games, but it's totally worth it. This system is SCREAMING fast now. :)

Hope some of this info helps!

Solution on this issue for Webcams

SYMPTOMS

When you view the properties of the Quickcam in the Devicemanager, you may receive the following error message on the Status line:

Ntkern.vxd device loader for this device could not load the device driver.(code2)

CAUSE

Support files from the Windows 98 CD-ROM were not installed properly or have been corrupted. Frequently, the reason is due to a incorrect version of the Windows 98 CD-ROM (WIN98 SE for WIN98 system).

RESOLUTION

 Delete the following files (or rename: example: ksuser.dll > xksuser.dll):

C:\Windows\system\ksuser.dll
C:\Windows\system\ksinterf.ax
C:\Windows\system\ksdata.ax
C:\Windows\system\ksvpintf.ax
C:\Windows\system\ksclockf.ax
C:\Windows\system\ksxbar.ax
C:\Windows\system\kswdmcap.ax
C:\Windows\system\vfwwdm.drv
C:\Windows\system\vfwwdm32.dll
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\stream.sys
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\ks.sys
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\MSPCLOCK.sys
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\MSKSSRV.sys

 Disconnect the Quickcam, Uninstall the Quickcam software, reboot the system
 Reinstall the Quickcam software and when prompted for the Windows 98 CD-ROM, make sure to insert the original WIN98 installation version.

Like Dave in #46, I have a preloaded Windows98, and would like to use my IBM Aptiva "Recovery" CD to resolve the problem. However, there is a warning about there being a possible reformatting of the hard file. A chance I'm not willing to take.
It's not enough to simply replace the NTKERN.VXD. I did that by extracting it from the Windows/Options/CAB folder using the System File Checker. It used that copy, but it didn't help solve the pc camera install propblem.

Wow. I got my VMM32.VXD error to go away, but not before I tried every recommendation here and another 50 message discussion forum. I deleted the questionable files and reloaded Windows, but no go. I did full reinstalls of Win98. No go. My going in position was to NOT reformat the hard drive. I reloaded the basic Win 95 and re-upgraded to win98. No go. I upgraded to second edition 98. No go. I uninstalled my new NIC. No go. I removed the same NIC. No go.

Are you ready? Something made us look in the autoexec.bat file. Sure enough, something had written DOS commands pointing to VXD files. We Remarked these out of the autoexec file (leaving it with absolutely nothing in the autoxec file) and all is well.
