Comment: Right now I am currently trying to fix a computer for a family that I know. It's a Sony Vaio Digital Studio (it doesn't even deserved to be named that). It runs on Win98 SE After this family tried to install an Ezonics USB Cam II on their system, it crashed the sound, and the USB ports. I came in and unistalled the Ezonics Cam II and all of it's bundled software. I also unistalled the USB port contollers and the ICH Hub contoller software for Intel's i810 chipset. I reinstalled the drivers still to get an error message with the USB port device. Somethign about NTkern.vxd not being able to load the driver for this device. I had also reinstalled the sound card driver which is for the Yamaha AC-XG for the AC-97 standard except I also get the same message about NTkern.vxd plus mmdevldr.vxd. After tons of research on the net about this prob, I realize that this is not an isolated problem. Every message board and support forum I've been to has multiple topics on the NTkern and mmdevldr issue but I really don't see any straight answers. I'm thinking it has to do with Windows rearranging device resources. Any answers? Oh here's a list of other things I tried to do to solve the problem: -Download updated drivers -Checked the BIOS to make sure USB was enabled -Recopied the ntkern and mmdevldr files from the Win98 cabs -

Reply: (edit)If you get the calls about these two drivers while windows is loading, it is because these calls were made from either system.ini or win.ini or most probably the Registry. Do a thorough search in the registry and locate the calls made to these to drivers. eg C:/windows/system/vmm32/ntkern.vxd DELETE these calls. (Plaese make a Backup of your Registry!) Reboot the system. Should be fine. I think a new copy of ntkern.vxd was loaded from some software recently and subsequently new calls were made in the registry for it to be loaded when the OS loads. Check windows device manager, system devices, in SAFE mode; you may have double copies of drivers loading here.... can lead to driver conflicts when new hardware is added...possible IRQ conflict. Best of Luck.

Reply: (edit)Clive, I figured the registry had something to do with it. I'll give it a try, thanks. -Wertz
