Please please help!!!!!

I've come back from 3 weeks vacation to spend the whole day trying to fix a colleagues PC.

It was working fine but after switching off overnight it no longer boots up (not even the single beep). I've tried just about everything i can think of (see below) so if you have any other ideas then please let me know.

Have removed and reseated all memory, cards, and processor.
Have tried different graphics card and processor (same kinds from diff PC).
Have removed and changed battery, have tried resetting cmos by changing jumpers.
Have changed power cables and changed power supply.

Power goes to the PC as fans (power supply and processor) both run, cd drice opens and HD whirrs.

Have tried booting with no PCI or graphics card or CD, HD etc connected and all still nothing.

I'm totally stuck now...any other ideas or is the MB ready for the bin??

Thanks in advance.

Neil

Since u get no beeps, there are 2 possibilities:

1) Either the BIOS has failed(in which case the best thing to do is replace the chipset), or 2)Some critical HARDWARE component is either missing or is not being deteced by BIOS upon startup.

Hi Neil! I believe you have already done a good troubleshooting.
I am very positive it is the motherboard that has failed and must be replaced.

Hey, NeilH
Hi, all.

I agree that you have pretty much exhausted the troubleshooting steps. The "not even the single beep" is quite disturbing and highly suggests the MOBO.
Yet, I have come accross some that do not have the bios chip hard soldered onto the board. If not, locate and press firmly to reestablish contact. You might even feel and hear a click or movement as it goes back in place.

Problem solved!!!!!! Until it goes again.

Was able to take the MB from an identical but defunct for other reason PC. Didn't work to start with until I noticed I hadn't put the bios chip in!!!!

And now it works fine......the relief when I heard the beep!!!!

Today I've learned how to change power supplies, processors, HD's, BIOS chips and MB's, reset CMOS, not too bad for the first day back.

Thanks for your help.

Neil
