I recently installed IE 5. after the install, I noticed that whenever I clicked on a .txt file, notepad would open the file, but I would also get an error message saying that the file could not be found or that a notepad library file could not be found. Once opened, it works just fine, but I was concerned why I get the error message. Can I extract notepad off of my windows cd and reinstall (*win98), and if so, where do I find it on the disk?

extract notepad.exe form the \win98 dir on the cd you can use system file checker if you are unfamiliar with it go to http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/serviceware/win98/e9qyp9568.asp. it gives instructions on how to use it >:)

Here's a better fix. Forget notepad. Download NoteTab Lite - freeware - from(WWW.notetab.com) or just about anywhere.
Put it in c:\windows. Rename notepad.exe to notepad.old (in case you want it back) and rename notetab.exe to notepad.exe
You'll never want to see notepad again!

Hi, Since installing IE5, Windows automatically launches Notepad periodically as c:\windows\notepad.exe /qazwsx.hsq . This keeps crashing my PC. Will try to rename and use Notetab instead.

notepad problem is related to so called qaz worm virus (same that was used to brake in to Microsoft). I cleaned it up using instructions on this news group posting.
