I have a plug and play device that use a UBS cable. When I plug in the cable with the device, windows open a "Building driver information database". It will freeze at 1% and when I hit ctrl-alt-delete, it shows me "Not responding". Rebooting does not help. So this plug and play device will not work until I can get windows to build driver information database. What do i need to do to fix this?

Do you have a CD for the device?

If so, unplug the device then boot up. Install the software first and reboot, then plug the device in.

I'm thinking that it is trying to find the drivers from Windows rather than the CD (if any).

If this doesn't help (or does not apply) then let us know what the device happens to be.

There is no CD for this device. Actually it's just a UBS cable that I got for my cell phone to transfer files to and from my phone to pc. It is a plug and play no driver.

I think you need to check with the supplier (or search Google). You normally need software in order to transfer pictures. There is likely to be a USB driver for it too. If there is no CD there might be a download out there.

If you manage to get anything then follow my suggestion in #1 unless you are told otherwise.

Are you saying that just connecting a USB cable (with nothing on the other end) is causing it to freeze? If that's the case then get another cable.

Otherwise, with 98 it probably needs some sort of driver. Plug and Play is such an abused term. I've even seen TVs, VCRs, telephones, etc. described that way.

PnP never means no drivers are needed. It only means the computer recognzies the device when you install it. Then it installs the drivers. If the OS has native support for the device then you may not need to do anything but click 'OK'. Or you may need to insert the system CD. If it doesn't have support then you'll need to supply the drivers as provided by the manufacturer of the device.

Assuming you find them, you may need to install them first before connecting the device in order to keep it from freezing.

I just notice that when I even try to install any type of hardware not just plugging in the UBS cable with the hardware attached, the "Driver information database" hangs and stops responding. I tried to install a PCI device and the same thing happens. I can't install any hardware until I can get this problem fixed.

I had that problem with a computer once and couldn't figure it out. I think I formatted and reinstalled (or maybe did an over-the-top reinstallation).

But since that PC is newer than 98 try installing the chipset/motherboard drivers.
