Not enough free extended memory to run setup for windows installation

I added 16megs of memory to my 486dx2 and went to load windows from dos and itm days I do not have enough extended free memory to run setup.How do I get more extended memory?Why didn't dos take car of this automatically.

use a program called memmaker. It comes with DOS

Sounds like your himem.sys (extended memory driver) isn't being loaded.

If you boot using a DOS95B or Win98 boot disk, as you're supposed to before installing Windows, then himem.sys will be loaded.

If you're not booting using a boot disk, go to www.bootdisk.com and make one and then try installing Windows.
