I am having no luck trying to download anything off the internet. Automatic updates work but when I try to click on a file to download I don't get the box asking me if I want to save to disk. Instead, when I click on a file to download, I get sent to a blank page with a small 3 colored box in the upper left hand corner of it. The page says "click for more information" When I do, it brings up a box saying "There is no viewer available for the type of object you are trying to open. The following information is available about this object:
address of object: (lists address)
content type: application/octet-stream
possible location of viewer: Microsoft ActiveX Gallery
Do you want to go to this location to look for a viewer of this type?"
Then when I click yes it sends me to the ActiveX Gallery where there are many things to download. I have tried to download different plug-ins that I think might help, but it hasn't worked. What is wrong? What am I missing? Do I have to reformat?
I am running Windows 98SE

The last time I saw something like that I went back to the original page where I clicked to download and found the name of the required viewer next to the download link for it.
I went to MS gallery first and could not know which to install.
Perhaps you will find the one you need there too.

Well the pages that I try to download from don't have anything next to the download saying what viewer to use. I don't think anything I'm trying to download is particularly strange. They are all just .exe files. Specifically, the two locations I have tried to download from most recently are Microsoft.com (I was trying to get the 6.0 version of Internet Explorer) & thesims.com (trying to get new items, cool items, etc.) Also, I have all the following installed: windows media player, quick time, & real player. Is it a plug-in for one of these? Or is it for DirectX?
