Norton stuck status refreshing

OS: Win 98
CPU/Ram: pentium 2 256 ram

I need some help. I think my pc got a virus. My Norton antivirus has Status "refreshing". I tried to find any trojans with spyware doctor, but i didnt. I tried to run norton, but it doesnt find anything. Also, somefeatures in norton are not working such auto protect. However, everytime i start up my pc i get a message of error Unknown i see exception c000000 module of 0000 : 6ff86e9c

I would really appreciate ur help

Try booting into safe mode (F8 as windows starts) and run your scans there.

Some malware will disable the tools that can remove it. Most cannot start in safe mode as the startup commands will not be processed.
