Norton hangs during initialize

I try to load System works 2002 on my system and it goes through all the steps until it is to initialize and it just hangs. I have had problems with a lot of software loading on my box. Maybe I have something set wrong? I make sure all programs are shut down. I have the most up to date OS patches. I have never gotten anything to run in compatability mode, besides this is XP compatable. Any advice would be appreciated.
