I did a dumb thing and need help. My Norton AV run out and I got tired of getting the messages from them to renew it so I decided to uninstall it. The dumb thing is that when I couldn't find the program disk I used the windows uninstall. It seemed to uninstall it but now (3 or 4 days later)began to get messages about not finding files.I still couldn't find the program disk so I searched the registry and C drive and deleted everything of Symantec and Norton. The registry was full of stuff. Well, I got it to where it only is looking for one file, C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVAP.VXD. I can't locate where the command is coming from. I did find the program disk but when it stops the uninstall because of "Internal Error 2753 NMain.exe.82434_423F_11D3_AF4B_0060081C705.
If anyone could advise how to take care of this problem I would appreciate it very much.

Thanks,
da

You have to take all references to Norton out of your sys.ini and win.ini files. If you have a config.sys file and an autoexec.bat file, remove references to Norton there also.

That should do it.

Use regedit. BACKUP your registry first then do a search for NAVAP.VXD. Delete that entry. Reboot and see if the message goes away.

OK. Believe it or not, if you do an uninstall, a lot of times the whole Norton folder will still be on your hd.

Check to make sure that its not there.

Also look for 4 files that begin with "LU..."
Those are Live Update files and resist everything except manual removal.

Also, at Nortosn' web site there is a file called symclean.exe that I've had pretty good luck with.

da has the answer to where you will find the problem. There are a bunch of NAV files that use msconfig. I have about 6 in mine and I run 2002. I just got done installing 2003 on a computer I just unhooked 5 minutes ago. So look there.

Larry, RMC, Terri,

First I want to thank you for your time and effort. I tried all they suggestions again and still couldn't find the bad guy so I went into Norton and found a manual uninstall
procedure. I'll try that in the morning. Too late to start on that because if it doesn't work I'd think all night instead of sleeping.

Larry, I didn't find the "symclean.exe". If my manual job don't work I'll look a little harder for that. I'll let you all know the results.

Thanks again,
da

Larry, RMC, Terri,

A hearty thanks to all of you!!!!!!

After my coffee this morning I got back to the problem at hand. First I run reg clean which probably did something but not what I was looking for. Next I run Windows installer cleanup which was recommended by the Norton manual uninstall. The last and I'm glad to say successful task was doing the Norton manual uninstall. I found entries in the registry that were left over after searching a few times.

1.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet \VxD\NAVAP.
2.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\\Run
Found NAV Agent C:\PROGRA~\NORTON~1NAVAPW32.EXE
I had searched with "*.NAVAP.VxD".

Again many thanks, I really appreciate your time and effort and good job.

da
