It is a letter/number combo that usually only valid for a matter of days. I just updated my definitions about a month ago and the key lasted for 5 days.

2002 hasn't been out long enough to need one yet ,when I installed nav2001 it gave me 366 days ,before subscription would expire. 2002 would be the same, unless it is a beta/trial version, those are only good for 30 days. and you'd need to purchase a retail version to get a subscription.
