Norton Anti Virus consistent crashes

I have recently SystemWorks 3.0 in my Windows 95. EVERY time I try to run a virus scan, a crash is intercepted in my Norton Anti Virus by my Crash Guard. The crash always takes place on the same file, and when I run the windows search the file cannot be found. The file is a compressed file caled javabase.cab. I've been well pleased with an older version of Norton Anti Virus, but was notified by the company that it was too outdated to be updated and to intercept e-mail problems. Is the anti virus in System Works 2000 a piece of junk? I've uninstalled the anti virus and reinstalled it, and uninstalled the System Works 2000 and reinstalled it. The problem persists.

"NORTON" "NORTON" "NORTON" Get rid of Norton. Norton utilities have caused more headaches[and heartaches] than any other utilities. If you are going to use anything of Norton, get an old copy or Norton Anti-Virus 4.0. It is the least obtrusive of Norton "stuff". And if you do get the antivirus and after running it, it asks you to repair any of your key files or Master Boot Record answer NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. Get the picture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Above response is basicaly right on. The crash however is not caused by Norton anti virus, but by norton crash guard. An even bigger piece of crap. Uninstall the whole system works, and then do a custom install, and install the anti virus ONLY. Al

Crash Guard is the only Norton product thus far that I do not install. NU 4.0 & NAV 5.0 & SYS WKS 2.0 have been reliable for the last 6mo's.About I must go now, it's time to count my $of nothing again...
I have exactly the same problem that you describe. I tried uninstalling Crash Guard, but that did not help. The crash still occurred when javabase.cab is being scanned. There is a way to turn off the scanning of all compressed files. Bring up Systemworks, click on Options, then click on Norton Antivirus. Under options, click on Manual scan. Uncheck "Scan within compressed files." Click OK and then proceed with your virus scan. Another possibility is to allow scanning of compressed files but block scanning of cab files. Bring up Systemworks, click on Options, then click on Norton antivirus. Under options, click on Exclusions. Click New. The Add Exclusion dialog box appears. Type *.cab in the Item box. Check Include subfolders, check Virus detection, and then click OK. *.cab will appear in the Exclusion list. (If "Virus Detection" does not appear in that box, ignore that part.) This will enable your virus program to scan all files except those you choose to exclude.
