hi all;
i reformatted my hard-drive--i'm giving my computer away and figured i would wipe it clean and reinstall the os. when it was all finished being erased, i typed 'exit' at the c: prompt. and now all i get is a "non-system disk or disk error". i can't boot anything from either the cd or the a drive--and i've fiddled with my bios settings to make sure things are booting from the right place. any ideas?

If you give your computer away after formating and want to show it boots to C drive, boot your computer with the boot disk and at A dos prompt type:
sys c: (press Enter)
When you reboot without the diskette you should get a C dos prompt. The CD-Rom will not be there to use until the next operating system is installed.Your friend will need a boot diskette to install its operating system from a CD.Try the Windows 98 boot disk for this purpose.

Good luck.

If you can't boot from a floppy you probably have the hard drive first in the boot sequence. The floppy must be first. Either that or you have a bad floppy diskette.

Maybe you disabled the floppy controller/changed the floppy type by accident when you were messing with the bios... There'll be an option in bios to 'reload bios defaults' somewhere:
go for that (the defaults _always_ allow booting from floppy),
then try and boot with a known good bootdisk (ie. one that works on another pc)

hmm. okay. so i've tried this stuff (thanks) and now i get "remove disks or other media. press any key to start". and when i do this, i get "invalid system disk. replace the disk and then press any key" i'm pretty sure that the bootdisk is fine (assuming that the stuff on bootdisk.com is okay)....any ideas as to what i'm messed up about?

the file downloaded from bootdisk.com , you did run it from the hdd and not just copy it to the floppy?
IF you did run the program go back into bios and select only boot from the floppy and see what error is reported when booting.

Hi Russ,

When you download the bootdisk you need to download somewhere other than the floppy.
Click on the download and you will be prompted to insert a floppy and the files will be extracted to the floppy.

Check the bios, your setting may be named a little different.

Floppy Drive A: 1.44MB 3-1/2"
1st boot device=Floppy
OnBoard FDC(floppy disk controller)=Enabled

Depending on the bootdisk it may have created a RamDrive bumping up your cdrom one drive letter.

At the A:\>type E: [Enter]
At the E:\>type setup [Enter]

hey all. so i just figured out that some win95 start ups don't come with cd rom support--went to bootdisk.com and used a win98 bootdisk--didn't sys c: it--and it all seems to be working fine. so far at any rate. many thanks for all your help.
cheers
russell
