I installed my seanix recovery disk and then it asked me to selt from 4 options. I chose format witoutlossing files. It said it was removing winows 95. Then it asked me to install the windows oprating disk. I DON'T HAVE ONE.Now i am left with a computer and no operating system. Are my files all lost? how can i get windows 95 back up on this computer and operating..........

"install the windows oprating disk"
Perhaps it is referring to the disk you were already using?
Otherwise, what were the other three options it offered?

It's quite possible that you can get a W95 CD if you search eBay and the like. I would never wish to run an OS without a copy of it on CD. Many folk do that with XP but I still think it's a risky deal and should be insisted on by the public.
Great unless your HD dies. A boot floppy (when provided) still has to call info from the HD.

I was also thinking about the ebay option, but with a PII you might consider 98se, depending on how much ram you have and the price.

Yes, W98SE is a lot better than W95 in many respects.
I ran it quite nicely with a Pent III and 64M RAM. It will run "reasonably well" with a PentII and 32M RAM but the worse the spec the worse the performance.W95 will ran faster than W98SE on a limited machine so it all rests with your spec, what programs you have onboard, and how you use the machine. There is scope for a fair bit of considered judgement on all of this.
In principle older hardware runs better with older operating systems but you lose out on later options/facilities. Like it or not unless you are running at least XP these days then you are already somewhat out in the cold. W98SE suits me but inevitably the time will come when I will not be able to do something that I require, even if it is down to lack of available software.

Run fdisk from a 98 bootdisk. If you don't have one you can download a file to create one at www.bootdisk.com. Run the file to create the bootdisk and then boot the computer with it. At the prompt type FDISK and enter. Y to large disk support if asked and then option 4. Exactly what does it say?
If the partition shows as FAT or FAT16 you can recover most of it using dos. If it's FAT32 any recovery is going to be more difficult.

To add to Derek's info, 98SE's resource management is far superior to 95. I ran 95 OSR2.5 for a long time, but with 98SE on my laptop resources never go below 70%. With 95 they would routinely dip to 20%.

I just brought in the computer and they installed win98. I lost almost everyting but I now have win98. Only problem now is that it doesn't recongnise my internal modem as before and the monitor? both are not even listed if i wanted to updqate the drivers

Try powering off and removing the modem card.
Reboot fully then shut down the machine again. Pop the modem card back then reboot and see if it finds it this time. Sometimes Windows has to be jolted into action. Can you switch to different screen sizes and colors using the computer? If so that is a sure sign that things are reasonable as regards "display drivers". Is the Display adapter entry looking OK in Device Manager?
There are also such things as "monitor drivers" but they are not usually too important. Go here:
Display Properties/Settings/Advanced button/Monitor.If the monitor number is not shown use the Change button. It may prove necessary to go against the MS recommendation then look through the drivers list and select the ones for your manufacturer/model.

"but with 98SE on my laptop resources never go below 70%"
It's foolish in the extreme to declare that one's own experience is universal
That's the trouble with you storytellers, you relate these charming little anecdotes and dress them up with far greater meaning than they actually possess - if you actually knew what you were talking about, you'd just say it without resorting to anecdotal 'evidence', maybe even cite an actual reference
I'm not one of those who think Bill Gates is the devil. I simply suspect that if Microsoft ever met up with the devil, it wouldn't need an interpreter
