Windows won't start and in fact the computer shuts down completely when I try to start it.
I keep getting a WIN won't start message that says: One of the following is not present or has the wrong version number. VMM.VXD SHELL.VXD VTD.VXD VXDLDR.VXD VPICD.VXD VWIN32.VXD
I'm running WIN98 SE version 4.10.222A on an HP 8660C with a Pentium III 533 MgHz processor. I have a HP ScanJet 6200C and reloaded the software; shut down and haven"t been able to get back up since. I've tried to run WIN98 from CD, tried bringing it up in Safe Mode. The best I'm able to do is get the CD drive working and DOS to come up.
uninstall the scanjet. Boot to a command prompt (hold down the control key while booting) type "scanreg /restore" and select a backup that worked. Will it boot now?
No...didn't work; although it gave me the message that the registry was without errors (and I went backwards through all the backups) it still boots to the same message on reboot. I even tried Norton Disk Doctor and it gave me the following: Error {35} General Protection Fault at 02D0: 0714 Code 0000 SS=0FD8 DS=0FD8 ES=1070 LOAD BASE=AB40 AX=0100 BX=2000 CX=0008 DX=0000 SP=F330 BP=F360 SI=1070 DI=001A
