Comment:

I can't get send any voice or hear voice on MSN Messenger. Headphones work fine with other communication devices-like Yahoo messenger and Dial Pad, etc. I went through the speaker check with MSN wizard and it works and so do other sounds from MSN (incoming message), etc. But no voice sound or microphone communication. What setting am I not doing? I get to the right pages and can carry on text conversations and it appears fine after 'Start Conversation'. (version 4.6.0073 for win 98). Thanks

Double click on the speaker icon in the lower right corner of the screen. On the first screen mute the microphone. Now click on the options and select properties. Now select recording now ok. In this screen make sure the microphone is selected. Exit and try it now.
Some times microphone impedance is a problem. You need an impedance of 2000 ohms or more. This is usually on the back of the package when you buy under specifications.

If you have a firewall that could be the problem.

Firewall was disabled. If I change the current settings that work fine with Yahoo messenger (not running at the same time) and Dial Pad, will this affect those programs and their now working connections? Microphone of headphones work just fine on them and the speakers are off.

MSN's new version has a lot of problems with voice. If you have a too old soundcard it won't work for some people, despite it works in other programs.

I and the person I use to talk with desided to install the older version again. If you want that installationfile just let me know

Thanks; 3 of us installed MSN messenger today and it doesn't work on any of our computers leading us to believe they are configured wrong. Two have 98SE and one 98. Current drivers on 2 diffeent types of sound cards as we looked into that. Good quality headphones that we have been using. What version do people recommend if it came to that?

We installed MSN 4.6 on March 11 since then problems. We have partioned use with 98 and 2000. 98 no use at all, 2000 real slow on startup and not instant connectio as before.. Friend of ours also downloaded latest, his address book wiped clean!!! Now will have to do complete re-load on ours to get back right again, before this both systems running perfect. Only goes to show that we have such individual systems that no knows what is REALLY going to happen. In future our motto if it works ok then leave the new version alone.
