Hi
Have SBLive PCI OEM card in new Gateway 750. The card is present and functioning according to System. No sound present in earphones or speakers.

Have tried:
3 replacement sound cards from Gateway
Removing and reinstalling SB Live SW after using Norton to purge all older traces of origional installations.
Installed SB driver upgrade.
New Fortissimo card. Out $50 on this attempt at repair
Reformatted origional drive and reinstalled operating OEM operating system (W98SE.)
Replaced hard drive, reformatted and reinstalled OEM OS and installed sound card.
Reseated card in slot, tried different slots.
2 different sets of headphones. (card has been set for headphone output).
Speakers sputter on powerup. Very faint sound might be present when speakers connected into line out.
bootlog .txt doesn't show anything obviously related to the sound card not loading.
Direct X 7.0 [4.07.00.0716] is in the system
Attempted to change sound card IRQ from 10 to 5. Change was not allowed.
Tried Direct X troubleshooting procedure
No problems found.
There is a problem with wave device for voice modem. Properties states that the drivers are not present. I have not been able to get drivers to install by removing and letting the device reinstall. The system cannot find the correct driver(s) in eithere the W98se install disks or in c:\cabs.
Reinstalled Direct X 7.0 a
Ran Microsoft System File Checker. setupx.dll listed as corrupt.
Upgraded to Liveware 3.0 (lw30full_9.zip.) No sound
Upgraded SBLive (sblw9xup.exe.) No sound
Ran Microsoft System File Checker. setupx.dll stil listed as corrupt.
Msinfo32.exe does not report any obvious conflicts or problems.
This started after I immediatly removed AOL 5.0 from the new system. Lost operating system. Reformatted folowing instructions from Gateway. Did basic W98se install. Gateway support can only suggest more reformats and reloads. There is no diagnostic capabilities available from Gateway. Nice people, but no answers. Am on verge of returning system for credit. Would prefer to fix and keep it.

Help,

Ray

Ray,

Sounds like AOL has screwed up another computer! As far as Windows finding the drivers for the wave device on the modem, I have found that often Plug n Play does not find the drivers. I suggest that you do a manual search at the point Windows declares the drivers can not be found. This always works for me. With out having your system to work with all i can suggest is one more reformat only using fdisk as well as format. You could also not let Plug n Play install the sound card, modem, ect. but load them later manualy, or on a reboot. I know you would like to keep the system, but if you can't get it up and running correctly then by all means, make Gateway replace it, only situlate that AOL NOT come installed!
