i've just reinstall windows because there was no sound coming out of the speaker. but still, after a clean install was done, there's no sound. i've tried using another pair of speaker, ensuring sound card is detected and driver are installed in "device manager", no irq conflict in "resource" tab, speaker icon is on system tray, volume is not "mute"......any suggestion?

thanks.

also, when i try playing a .wma file this message appeared - Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly.

and under control panel > sounds, i click on "asterisk" then "preview", this appeared - windows cannot play the sound C:\WINDOWS\media\chord.wav. Your sound card may be in use.

Just a couple of thoughts - plugged into the correct socket? On-board or add-on soundcard? Any 3rd party soundcard software running which may have muted system. Is it all sound - system sounds and CD music?

What is the model of the sound card? Not one of those CMedia sound cards by any chance?

johnr,

it's an old isa card - creative AWE64 16-bit audio(SB compatible). the speaker is plugged to the inlet nearest to game port adapter. as from my experience, this should be the way for all "creative" sound card.(correct me if i'm wrong?)

"Is it all sound - system sounds and CD music? "
sometimes, when i click on a folder, i hear the "click" sound coming out of the speaker. but not always. and there is no startup "music" when system boot to desktop. i just try playing a cd with media player 9 and error message stating "windows media player encountered an error when reading the cd-rom drive in digital mode. click "ok" to switch to analog mode. click cancel to retry playing in digital mode." i click ok and yes
it plays and i can hear music. but the other problem stated above still persisted.

this is the error code when i try playing .wma files - Error ID = 0xC00D11BA, Condition ID = 0x00000000

What is the CT number on the card? When using the drivers on the 98 cd to set them up, some of the CT2XXX and CT3XXX series cards didn't set up completely. In device manager the sound card would seem to be OK but there would be an 'unknown device' listed also. Because the sound card seemed to be setup OK you wouldn't expect the 'unknown device' to be associated with the sound card. But if you run the 95 upgrade from creative's site the 'unknown device' goes away.

If that sounds familiar you may want to get the upgrade and see if that helps. Or maybe the sound card is bad. Just because you can set it up that doesn't necessarily mean the card is good.

Was this bit a typo? "the speaker is plugged to the inlet".

Not inlet, "speaker out" or even "line out" are more likely possibiliies.

DAVEINCAPS,

the model is CT4500. it used to works fine with win98, i've been using it for 2 yrs. and no, there isn't any unknown device in "device manager", all hardware are detected and listed. to rule out the possibility of fautly card, i tried another card CT4170 and still no sound.

Derek,

i didn't check the exact name for that, but just did - SPK/LINE.

Yeah, the ct4500 should set up OK.

Does your computer have on-board sound that may need to be disabled if you install a card?

After the fresh installation did you install any other software before checking the sound card?

Are you using amplified or non-amplified speakers? If they're non-amplified the jumpers on the card need to be set for speaker (and not line) output.

hi DAVEINCAPS,

i've found out the cause, it is the ram. you might want to read this thread in the hardware forum.

http://www.computing.net/hardware/wwwboard/forum/25307.html

i copied the win98 folder off the cd and because of bad ram stick, it was a corrupted copy.(though installation when through) and i belive the sound system file was corrupted during installation but somehow the process when through. i've swopped the bad ram stick with a 64mb stick and tried reinstalling. everything is back to normal.

Go to START--SETTINGS--CONTROL PANEL--SYSTEM--DEVICE MANAGER. Your sound card is set up under 'sound, video and game controllers' What does it say there about your sound card?

I can't tell if everything you need is installed. It depends on the type of sound card you have.

In 'multimedia' in control panel, what is listed as the playback devices? Does the volume control show up in the lower right corner taskbar?

Do your speakers plug into a card that's inserted in the motherboard? If so that's an add-on card. If they plug into the rear computer connections by the mouse, KB and other ports then it's on-board sound.

You may want to post back the information about the motherboard or sound card so we can determine where to get the drivers, if necessary.

Hi,

Well On sound playback the audio device is modem #0 line playback.

the MIDI music playback is MPU-401.

Also under volume it is no audio device.

The volume control doesnt show up in the taskbar but i can access it via the control panel & it wont let me change the volume

Something associated with the sound card should show in 'playback device' in multimedia. What you have now is the wave device for your modem.

I think you should try reinstalling the drivers for your sound. I usually open the case to check things out but it may be easier for you to use something like Aida32.

Anyway, whether you open the case (it's not a laptop is it? If so DON'T open it up) or use something like Aida32, post pack what it says about the motherboard and sound. That way we may be able to locate the drivers, if you don't have them.

sorry to post another sound problem but im also having a sound problem, sound was fine till i got a new hard-drive and now there is no sound at all, under sound and multimedia it says "no playback device detected" under playback sound device and voice playback under midi music playback it has mpu 401.

Ive tried installing new drivers, no sound, ive tried changing my BIOS settings no sound ive tried everything.

It worked fine before i got a new hard-drive.

i have a fujitsu siemens 1.2ghz, 128MB RDRAM, think its an aztech or C-Media sound card, windows ME.

Chloe, the download included the XP drivers as well. It may be a good idea to start a thread on the XP forum as there may be other factors involved of which I'm not aware.

Alex, the Asrock drivers are here:

Asrock Drivers

There is a P4I45D+ and a P4I45D motherboard. It looks like the drivers are different.

You need to make sure that the sound is enabled in cmos/bios setup.

If you have the right drivers and have installed them correctly and it still doesn't work you may want to start a new thread in the XP forum as there may be problems relating to XP that someone there may know about.
