No sound from Windows or Media players. The computer is a Gate solo Win98SE, Pentium II, 64MB.
Windows Media Player (9) gives error message 0xC00D11BA: "sound devise is in use by another program ... not functioning properly ... not installed."
Control Panel/System/Device Manager/ Plug and Play BIOS shows ESS Technologies ES1879 Plug and Plau AudioDrive (WDM) installed and "working properly" with no driver installed or required?
Control Panel/Multimedia/Devices/Audio or/Media shows the ESS AudioDrive (WDM)but status reads: "driver is enabled but inactive due to unknown reason." (The "use audio features on this device" is selected)
Sounds worked until recently ... I attempted to reinstall driver ... earlier. Am i missing the driver now? Help! Ideas?

Dumb question here, but did you shut down and start again?
(Not restart, but actual shut down)When all else fails, beat the %*#$! out of it!!!

Yes,
(And thank you for the reply.)
I did actually shut down all the way, more than once. Since the first post ... I reloaded the driver from the ESStech site, just in case. No changes. I do get the 'beeps' at start up and modem sounds, but no windows or media sounds? Ideas anyone?

Although you reloaded the driver, did you remove the original? This can usually make a big difference.
If it ain't broke, leave it!!

What's the best way to make sure I am removing the correct one (not a computer genius here?
[After I (re)installed the driver and restarted Win98SE treated it as if it had detected new hardware...]

First of all, double check you've got the correct driver from the website.
From control panel, double-click 'System'
Select 'Device Manager'
From here, select your sound card and click 'Remove'Once you have done this, shut down (completely) and power back on. Windows may find it when you turn back on, if not run 'Add new hardware' from control panel.
When prompted for the driver, just browse to where you have saved it.
Hopefully, this should sort it.
If it ain't broke, leave it!!

Jonno,
Thanks for the reply(s). I did all that. Windows found it on power up. But still no sound?
Could it be another area? I do not have a speaker icon on the lower right toolbar; I cannot remember if it was one there before? but i do remember clicking on something there yesterday to see what it was?

Jonno and angrymen2001,
Thanks for your responses; I got it!!!!
I downloaded the drivers for the sound device from the manufacturers website and unzipped them into a known location (I had to select the unzip only rather than the unzip and install option I chose earlier).
I then installed the driver(s) [via Control Panel/System/Device Manager] from that location. I specifically ignored the advice of the 'Update Device Driver Wizard' this time in order to do so.
Thanks again for your responses.
Daver
