make sure the sound card is installed. Right click my comp and go to properties, then go to the hardware tab. Then the hardware componenets option. Open that up and see if there are any devices under sound, if not reinstall driover.

Fred,

1.In the System Properties window you open , DON'T click the Peformance tab

2.Click the Device Manager tab

3. Note under Computer the various devices installed in it, grouped alphabetically and each cluster showing a + (plus) sign to the left of its name.

4. Scroll down to Sound Video and game controllers and and open the cluster by clicking its + (Plus) and the + turns - (minus) and the components in the group will be displayed on the RIGHT. Note for the presence of any Device Manager error Symbols
5. Copy the name of what appears to you the sound card

6. Post that information and the type of error symbols you see here as well as in a cluster + Other devices if present.Open Other devices if present, and copy and post the name dispalyed there.

fred,

I wished you posted the name of your sound card from the expanded -Sound video and game controllers as I suggested in my post.:-)

The ? Other devices with the contained PCI Serial device tells me that your Modem has a problem. This type of Modem instead of communicating through the Motherboard Serial Port uses a Serial controller which is a communication controller built in the Modem and in the absence of the right modem drivers loses its function causing the ? Other device error in Device Manager

You need to have the Modem software to correct the problem by Updating the driver through Device Manger.

1. Double-click the Other Devices > PCI Serial Controller> Properties
2.Click the Driver tab> Update Driver
3.Click Next >Search for a better driver than the one your device is using now (Recommended)> Next
4.Insert the driver disk or Disc that was included with your modem.
5. Click to select the check box for the drive corresponding to the media type ( Floppy A:\ drive or CD-ROM drive), and then click Next.
6. If you receive an Update Driver Warning dialog box, click Yes.
7. Click Next> Finish >Yes to Restart your computer

Regarding Sound:

1. Do you see a Speaker icon for Volume
Control
in your System Tray? [ The RIGHT end of Taskbar where Time/Date is displayed.

2. If Volume control is missing in System Tray click Start>Settings>Control Panel> Multimedia
and Double click Multimedia> Audio tab and locate your Sound card in the Preferred device: for both Playback & Recording. If your sound card noted in the Device Manager is not seen, click the down arrowhead of the Preferred device box to open and look for it in the drop-down box. After selecting the Sound card place a check mark in the box of Show volume control on the taskbar toward the bottom of this window.

3. Next, double click to open the Master
Volume Control
and unmute by removing the check mark in the Mute box and Raise the sliders to higher level.

If sound is still missing, provide the following data.

1. If brand name PC, its Make and Model displayed on its case or from Documents.
2. Name of Sound Card shown in Device Manager
