Sorry to keep bothering you all, I have recently been having all kinds of problems (which are now resolved thanx to alot of help from this forum). I have just installed windows 98 on a maxtor 80gb drive. installation has gone well & i've now got a perfect computer bar the sound.
I've checked the usual power, leads & port settings.
Sound blaster is enabled in bios
I have 2 sound drivers in device manager - sound blaster card & another.
I have no sound from either of my 2 CD drives or in windows. Can anyone help me out one last time?

Have you installed the drivers for the sound card?

If its onboard sound then they will be on the motherboard cd

A point to bear in mind, Windows has internal drivers for many sound cardsa, but they are prety basic to say the least, by downloading the drives for my sb32 from creative i was able to get full duplex operation on my card and it also improved the sound and speeded up my system. Its worth getting the manufacturers drivers where you can

thanks woof,

I've installed everything on my 3dfx driver cdrom for the motherboard but don't know what sort of sound card i've got, I'll check out the voodoo & 3dfx sites, but on previous installations of windows I didn't need to do this, the windows drivers installed & workde just fine.

err - sorry not that advanced, how exactly do I put the sound on irq7? is it done in BIOS integrated peripherals?
Have found a couple of promising drivers on driverguide but will have2 wait till I get home & put in a new DVDROM.
Thanks again Woof. J

from control panel, system

but try using aida32 to find out exactly what soundcard you have, that brings up links in its report so you can go straight to the manufacturers site:

I believe that aida32 will only give you a report on devices that the drivers are already loaded for. That's how it knows what it is. Also IRQ 7 is used for your LPT1 (printer) port. If you set your sound card for 7, you'll have a conflict. Sound cards generally use IRQ 5. If 5 is being used by another device, try 10 or 11, they're generally available.
It may not even be an IRQ conflict. I'm wondering why you have 2 listings in device manager for the 1 card. I'd remove one or even both, reboot, and windows will come up with the add new hardware wizard. I suspect what you need is the correct driver for the card.

Not sure what IRQ's are exactly but my printer is USB. There are no device manager conflicts and last night I removed all drivers from the sound video and game controller in device manager. When the PC rebooted, no new devices were dectected. I then went to manually add hardware & found 2 audio devices but the problem was still there...

Had someone ask for help with win98 driver for a supra max 56K modem. Found a list of drivers for supra max, but without knowing which supra max modem there were at least 15 possible drivers. Did a google search by the part# and to my surprise I got 2 hits. Try it.

Just a side note of little importance - You said that your printer is USB. You still have an LPT1 parallel printer port, and it will be using IRQ 7 even if you have no printer attached to it it.
IRQ's are listed in device manager under the resources tab.
But really, the issue is likely the driver.

Thank you all -

So...If the IRQ is set to port 5, 10 or 11, it's OK & The driver is at fault.
I've installed all of the drivers which came with the motherboard - so how do i locate the correct driver (as you say the link woof sent will only detect correctly set up drivers & hardware)
I have looked on the 3dfx site but cannot see anything relating to soundblaster.

also confused about OtheHill's post.

Cheers

J

Just thought I'd add a post to say my speakers are now working! thankyou all very much. Woof, the Aida download identified that i needed a driver for VIA AC'97 & pointed me to exactly the right site.

The IRQ's were all set correctly & I don't know why this wasn't a problem on previous windows installations - I think maybe I've lost a driver installation CD for the motherboard (soltek)
