I had Win 98 1st edition on my computer and have been able to format and reinstall as needed with no problems. Decided to format and intall Win 98 SE, that is the only thing I have done differently. Now I have no sound. The computer recognizes the sound card and says it is installing the required software, everything seems to go without any problems, but there is no sound. When I open a media player I get the message, "no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding". I have even tried formatting and installing Win 98 SE with the sound card completely removed, then after install I shut the computer off, plug the sound card in, then reboot so the computer recognizes it and installs the drivers. I have also removed it from the device manager and again rebooted. Nothing works, Help.

Do you have a software CD for your sound card? Maybe it needs you to download later drivers.

Yes I have a driver disk for the sound card which I also tried, and remember this is a sound card that always worked with 98 1st edition, now nothing once SE is installed.

Hi,

Check out the sound card or computer manufacturers web sites to see if there are upgraded drivers for the sound card when using Win 98 SE.

Right click on 'my computer', choose 'properties' and then 'device manager'. Are any of the items there associated with a yellow ? or !

What is the model number of the sound card?
