I have problems with sound on my computer. First of all when it playes CDs there is no sound. Second of all, recently I downloaded Codecs (DIVX player and the whole package) from the net, and even though my computer plays movies well now, there is once again no sound (I was trying to listen using headphones). I checked the volume and everything simple like that, and it is as it should be, - still no sound.
I also checked under control panel/multimedia if evertyhing was ok there and it seemed so, even though I am not very good with computers, so I might have missed something.
Also, I checked under control panel/(add/remove programs)/windows setup, to see if perhaps part of the multimedia package wasn't installed right. And what we have installed is: Audio Compression, Cd player, Macromedia Shockwave, Macromedia Shockwave flash, Sound Recorder,Vidoe compression and volume control. Therefore, the ones not installed are: smaple Sounds, and Multimedia Sound Schemes.
I also talked to my friend and she said I might have some kind of problem with my sound card. I don't know how to even check that the computer has one, since I wasn't the one who bought it and someone else had it before me. Or if i do have a sound card, I don't know how to activate it or do whatever you have to do so that there is sound.
I would really aprecite any advice you could give me.
Anna.

I would say the same. If you have no audio
cable, connecting your CD drive directly with
your sound card, then you CD player will run
without any warning, but give no sound.

I have a similar problem, but I have no
connector for the cable on my sound card,
which is integrated to my motherboard.
However, a CD player under Win XP plays fine.
It uses motherboard to route the signal. I
wonder if there is a player for Win98 which
does not need the cable?

Roght click 'My Computer' and select Properties. Look in the Device Manager tab / Sound Video and Game controllers. Do you have any red or yellow exclamation points? Do you see any audio devices installed?

I forgot to ask. Do you hear the system sounds. If you do, the sound card is working ok.

If you are using Windows Media Player set the playback option in this from "digital" to "analogue".

Go to Start, Run, type in dxdiag then OK. Go thru the audio and video DivX testers and see if any sound comes thru with the tests.
