I was chatting with a lady through instant messenger. And she told me she has no sound of any kind(media player, windows evens, ect.)I told her to open the Volume Control box,but it would not open.I told her to do this:
start>program>accessories>entertament>volume control. But she couln't open volume control.
I told her to see if she had any conflict in device manager for her sound and she told me it said it was working properly. I told her if she had done any updates and she said yes. It was after the update that she had no sound. I think she updated from windows 98 to 98se.I suggested she download the driver from the manufacterer but she don't know the brand of her computer. It was given to her by her parish. Can anyone suggest what else i can recommnend her to do. Only thing i said is to install a sound card. But i want to know if i could somehow get the audio driver. How can she get me the model of her computer? Thanks.

Get her to download a free program called EVEREST. This will give all the information about the computer hardware.

Check in "Control Panel/Add Remove Programs/Windows Setup" to see if Volume Control is installed (in Multimedia). Uninstall/Re-install often helps, using Windows CD.

Go to Control Panel/Multimedia and make sure volume control check box is ticked (at bottom of Audio tab).

Derek, my friend was able to use Everests and she found out that she has a PCI Soundblaster64.She went to creativelabs site downloaded the driver but still she has no sound. It's there a way to get maybe the cdrom. She don't have it.

I'm wondering if it might be a whole lot simpler if you get your friend to raise a post on this forum by selecting her OS and doing the free sign-on.

As I'm sure you know, it can be tricky fixing computers remotely, so the closer we can get to the source the more expedient it all becomes. If she is not too experienced then that's fine, although it is better if she says so and we can take a little more care.

If your friend has no CD with the sound drivers it can sometimes be a bit tricky finding just the right ones. They then need to be installed correctly.

You could go to Device Manager and see if there are any errors showing (yellow question marks and the like) - for either of these issues.
