my buddy has a Compac computer with windows 98 on it.It seems he deleted the sound icon in the system tray a while back and now has no sound on his media player, but only his WMP.He still has sound elsewere but not on windows media player. We have tried the obvious and now I'm wondering if the driver for WMP is a seperate driver that needss to be reinstalled or to delete WMP entirerly and reinstall it from Microsoft's website.????

Deleted the sound icon from the System Tray? That's quite a trick.
Check in control panel, multimedia 'show volume control on taskbar' - that should restore the icon
"We have tried the obvious"
What's obvious to some is not necessarily so to others - I'm hesitant to suggest this, but there is a volume & mute control in WMP itself.
What version?

Just to add that the speaker icon, although useful, is not "essential" in order for WMP71 to function. Mine runs fine without it and I use other arrangements to control volume etc.
The following info would be of value:
What happens when you double click a .wav file and a .mp3 audio file. These are traditional sound files and I'm wondering just what player starts up, if any.

Oh, sure - and removing it from the system tray doesn't actually 'delete' anything.
Is the problem confined to WMP7 ? Do other media players work alright (WinAMP, IrfanView, QuickTime etc)? You say sound works 'elsewhere', but that's a little fuzzy.
Is the problem associated with a specific file or with a type of media?
