Well, everything was working FINE until I decided to try playing an audio CD. Result? No sound. So I used the Windows 98 Help facility and finished up at the point where it said go to settings, sift through all the bumf, and if the sound is enabled and still not working on CD, then simply remove and install again from Win98 (SE) CD. No problem. Except:
The next piece of advice is to go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add new hardware/choose own hardware/select hardware types under sound, video and game controllers/manufacturers/MCI model CD Audio Device (Media Control) and click install.
At which point I'm asked to load the Windows 98SE CD and then. . . and then. . .

Nothing happens. The MCI file can't be found.

Result? A computer which played MP3s perfectly (and games, and everything else other than CD audio) now has no sound on it at all -- and I can't track down the missing MCI wotever-it-is on the Windows 98SE CD (and this despite endless searching).

Obviously, I've goofed somewhere. Equally obviously, this is a lousy way to end 2000 and go into 2001.

CAN ANYONE HELP?? WHAT IS THE MCI driver I'M SUPPOSED TO HAVE AND WHERE ON EARTH IS IT????

Happy New year to one and all --

Mike (muted) Reynolds

Are you sure the volume is turned up in soundcard mixer?

I hope this is a stupid question but are you sure the audio cable between the cd and sound card is connected?

Go to start on desktop and hit run. Type in msconfig. Go to Win.ini at top of page. Scan down until you see mci wave extensions. Check to see if anything here might help.
GOOD LUCK..

I need to download a Windows MCI Sound driver and I can't find it anywhere online. I know it's on my recovery disk but I can't find that anywhere either. I need to know if I can download the Windows MCI driver anywhere online.
