HI!!!
I am fixing up my old laptop with os WINDOWS 98SE and I managed after months of work to create a working wireless network for it , just that this installation created some vxd driver problems that I solved extracting the missing files from the CD and brought them to the windows/system folder...
Now all MISSING FILES in device manager are gone and I have no more yellow exclamation points...just some drivers missing because they were not "needed or asked for" but it says that all devices are working perfectly...Know I do not have any missing file errors at boot as I did before but I still have AUDIO PROBLEMS...
I have no sound, but I don't think the soundcard is broken because it worked very well before and recently it worked with cd's of pcgames but not with windows...Also the soundicon on tray to the right(near to the clock) is gone...
I did try ones to reinstall the sounddriver(picking up files from PC and not from a CD) but after that the pc wouldn't boot(maybe files wore corrupt?) so I went back a few days in the register to make it boot again...
I also have problems with the keyboard were some symbols(not the letters and numbers, just symbols like...@ ? ) & etc)changed places...
I did allready reinstall the keyboard driver but nothing changed....What do I do next to trace the soundproblems???
One more thing...would you tell me wich FIREWALL to put in my system...I have got AVAST antivirus...

You need to install the chipset drivers as well as the sound. Get them from the manufacturer's website.

I went to the website of Hp to look for drivers but the tag underneath my pc says:
Armada 1750 6300/T/4000/D/0/2...in the item list on site theres just pc's ending up with
0/1 and 0/3....no 0/2!!!Do you know why,and how can I know what drivers I need??
The MULTIMEDIA on controlpanel on my PC is EMPTY...there's just NOTHING IN IT...
HOW COME???I have the SOUND ICON in CONTROL PANEL but thers just the choice of what kind of sounds you want in windows...and to check were you want the sounds or not...

Hi!! I am in Italy...
The sound and the keyboard worked well before i installed the wireless network..the
pc had some error message at boot from the start, about missing DLL file....and it had windows 98FE...I wanted to get it into a wireless network so I upgraded it to windows 98SE and the dll error went away..I still had the sound at that point...When I first tryed to connect to internet by wire I think the new error messages about missing vxd files at boot started...and they did not go away even if I
disinstalled the wireless networkadapter....
I have now managed to replace the missing files and have no more error messages...Sometimes the sound worked with a pcgame CD but right now it does not work... even with the CD...If I place a CD in the reader it comes up some about serious error and SOUNDCARD not CORRECTLY INSTALLED....but I have no yellow esclamation points in device manager...

The link below is listed for the entire 1750 series. Get them all and burn to CDR.
Update the driver using the one you download from the link below. If the sound still does not work right remove the listing for within Device manager and reboot.
You should install all the drivers listed there. Especially the video and touchpad drivers.

I like this firewall, for low spec computers (that 's all I have)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Outpost_F...
larry

Nothing showing in 'multimedia' is the reason you have no sound. Audio is usually one of the more difficult functions to set up. Device manager may think everything is fine but you are probably missing some files. Just because windows didn't alert you doesn't mean everything is there.
It's also possible some wrong files were installed.
Go to 'add/remove programs' and see if you can uninstall the audio drivers. Then reinstall using the HP drivers.

Hi again thanks for the tips about the firewall...I did install it and seem to work fine.. wich mode should I normally keep?
(I have AVAST also)and should I update it and let the automatic update remain checked? Now to my soundproblems.....
In device manager in Multimediacontollers I have 2 lines
first one says
AUDIO DRIVE PLUG AND PLAY ES1869(WDM)
(ESS Technology,Inc.)version not available
Microsoft S-S-1999
No file for this driver has been asked for or installed for this driver, choose update driver.Second line says
CONTROL INTERFACE ES1868(WDM) 5-5-1999
Drivers information,
C\windows\ESS.SYS
C\windows\system\ntkern.vxd
C\windows\system\mmdevldr.vxd
c\windows\system 32\drivers\ESS.SYSShould I try first to reinstall the AUDIO DRIVE PLUG and PLAY from the first line, when I tried once, taking files from the pc itself it wouldnt boot after that..
could problems still have to do with the NTKERN.vxd that before was missing and I brought into windows\system from the win 98 cd?(dont think so)
I downloaded the AUDIO and KEYBOARD drivers from the HPsite to an USBdriver and put then on my desktop...was that ok to do like that or is the cd necessary?
Then I let extract the files thru dos(?)but now I don-t know what to do with them...they created various files on my desktop also an setup.exe do I have to use that?
Ther-s no way of unistall sound from my program list because there is no voice for sound there..
should I disable the CONTROL INTERFACE in device manager...
really dont know what to do next...

OK you downloaded SP9270. Open a dos window and navigate to wherever it's located. When you get to the directory it's in type SP9270 C:\. That will extract it to the c: drive. When extracting it will create a directory named IWDMH. In that directory will be a batch file named MAKEDISK.BAT. Ignore that. There will also be a subdirectory called Disk1. All the driver files are in the Disk1 directory.
When you choose to update drivers and specifiy a location, windows will go there and look for an .inf file. That .inf file contains the information windows needs to install the drivers. Often there will be a SETUP.exe file that does the same thing but it runs from either the command prompt or, from the desktop, from START--RUN. The C:\IWDMH\DISK1 directory seems to have both. Since the setup.exe file is there you might as well use it.
You probably will need to reboot after installing the drivers. Then if everything else is OK your sound should be working.

Hi..I downloaded to desktop and it opened a dos windows when it did...then it placed the makedisk.bat and a disk1/with a lot of files in it...also the exe is in there...is it better to instal thru dos as you said or can I just use the exe file?
After installed what do i do to the files I created on desktop,do I have to move or cancel(makedisk.bat and disk1)?Will this drivers be better than trying to download the ESSdrivers that I suppose were the previous sound drivers?
Could the new drivers create a conflict with the old ones?Do I have to remove something or disable before installing new drivers? And if they do create a conflict what do I do about that?
Spiken
I am fixing up my oldest pc as a learning machine for my children

You can probably run it either from a dos window or from the desktop. Don't do it from a pure dos mode such as when you'd boot directly to dos or exit windows to dos. Usually if you run it from a dos window it'll pop back to the desktop and start the installation.
After installing you can delete the installation files.
I assume those drivers will work better than generic drivers for the audio chipset since they were designed specifically for your model.
I'm not sure about a conflict with the previous installation. Just try it and see how it turns out.
Some driver installations don't include files that are on the 98 cd. So it may tell you to insert the 98 cd so it can get those files. That's often true for game port controller drivers. Hopefully you have the 98 cd or it won't ask for it.

Ok!!!I'll give it a try..hoping to do no harm on system....
I do have the WINDOWS 98SE UPGRADE CD..not the windows 98 or windows 98SE in their entire versions but when I installed other hardware I found all drivers(and all the famous vxd files)on this cd so I did not worry about finding other versions...
Later:
I did the installation and I got back the SOUNDICON on SYSTEMTRAY and had possibility to regulate VOLUME and everything were enabled...but there was still NOTHING in CONTROLPANEL about the sound..and NO SOUND....I regulated from volumeikon to let computer choose wich device to use and this made me loose the volumeikon again...I tryed to upgrade the 2 ESSdrivers from devicemanager but they just say that the best drivers are installed and If I want to choose from the list of possibilities there's just older dated drivers to choose from..So I am back at square number one...
Should I remove the 2 ESSvoices from device manager and reboot..to see if pc will find them or what can I do??
Spiken
I am fixing up my oldest pc as a learning machine for my children

When you choose 'upgrade drivers' from device manager you need to specify a location for the newer drivers otherwise it will always tell you the best drivers are already in use.
In control panel you need to check in 'multimedia' to see how it's set up. That's the only place it'll show. (Well unless the driver installation places its own icon there.) 'Sounds' only sets those annoying noises associated with windows' various tasks. It has nothing to do with setting up your audio hardware.
If at all possible you want to uninstall the existing audio and then reinstall. Just deleting the entries in device manager may not be enough. But if that's all you can do then give it a try. Some SETUP programs include an uninstall option. You may want to run it again and see if 'uninstall' is there.

Hi...I still have nothing in MULTIMEDIA at CONTOLPANEL ...Today the sound worked with the PCgame-CD but NOT in windows or in internet...I went to INSTALL NEW HARDWARE in CONTROLPANEL were I could choose froma a real LOT of multimedia audiodrivers and I found the 2 named in my list of multimedias...
ES1869 Contol interface and ES1869 Audio drive Plug and Play(they are still same names as before but with a newer date...shouldn't they be named ISA WDM instead???
I nearly beleave I did not istall anything even if I run the setup.exe of SP9270
Maybe I should try to install again?
The SP9270 is not an ESS-driver..right...??
So why in MULTIMEDIA I keep having the 2 ESSdrivers as I did before? Also the new driver ISA WDM or what it's called should create a folder with it's name in programs under C or what???
I cannot see it anywere, but I am also not sure how to look for it...but the ESSdrivers has got their folder....To make sound work what do I need to have in MULTIMEDIA list? Is it allways one Audio drive-Plug and Play and one Contol Interface?
I DID try more than ones to remove all MULTIMEDIA voices and reboot..at boot pc found NEW hardware it said and it installed the software needed, but with no changes...just a more recent ESSdriver
I am fixing up my oldest pc as a learning machine for my children

WDM is Windows Driver Model and is a standard for driver development. It's not a description of the drivers themselves. SP9270 is the correct file for your ESS audio.
The location of the folder that sp9270 extracts to is specified when you ran it. sp9270 c:\ extracts to the root directory of the C: drive.
Sp9270 c:\drivers would extract to a hypothetical folder named 'drivers' on the C: drive. In 'multimedia' the 'preferred audio playback device' needs to be your sound card. I'm not sure exactly how it will be worded there. That depends on what the drivers want to call it. For your sound icon to show in the taskbar, at least temporarily, it must have been correctly set there at that time.
When you deleted the entries in device manager and rebooted, the drivers reinstalled themselves because your initial installion put the .inf file in the windows\inf folder. That's the first place windows looks when it finds new hardware. If the file it needs is there then it goes ahead and sets up the hardware. If you delete the .inf file and delete the device manager entries for the device then windows can't set up the hardware and you'd need to run setup again.
I wouldn't try deleting that file--OEMSETUP.INF--since it's the right one and you might end up deleting the wrong thing. But you can run SETUP as many times as you want since that's not going to hurt anything.

I did install a directX....does that have to do with the sound also?not sure what version and i am not sure wich one is best for win98se?
This computer didn't have Java, directx or flashplayer, schockwave etc and I've tried to install versions of these ones that would go with the operation system
I've know got back the sound icon...(just icon NO SOUND)..on system tray and I can open it and regulate the sound and choose the output...but multimedia is all EMPTY and I've tried to upgrade the audiodrivers from different locations..extracting files from cd so on.. but it keep saying it has the best version and the CONTROL INTERFACE keep on saying NO DRIVERFILE IS ASKED FOR OR INSTALLED FOR THIS DEVICE.
I am fixing up my oldest pc as a learning machine for my children

I does have something to do with the sound and video too. The correct version is the one I linked to. I wouldn't have put the link there if it wasn't the right one.

You imply in your initial posting that all was OK until you installed the wireless network. Maybe it indirectly has something to do with that. You could uninstall all the network stuff and then see if you can get the sound going. Personally, when I have a mess like that I reformat and start over.
You've got the right audio drivers. If they're not working then likely it's either the network install or the previous attempts to fix the sound. You've manually added several files. Often they need to be properly referenced in the registry. But at this point there's no way to backtrack and do that.

Hi...I tried to install the active X but it wouldn't download..maybe because I allready have that version?
I also believe the soundproblems has to do with the networkinstall but I tried more than ones to uninstall network and It did not change anything...
Maybe there's still some missing driverfile but how can I track that?are there a driverscan that I can trust..I never used anything like that and don't know if they are secure?
Also heard about that sound could be disbled in DOS(or BIOS?),what does it mean and how do I know if that's the case?
Is it normal that CONTROL INTERFACE of sound says NO FILE IS ASKED FOR or NEEDED for THIS DEVICE,but WORKS PERFECTLY and NO CONFLICT...could it WORK anyway like this or should there ALLWAYS be a driver on this device to make it work????
How come the sound works with the PC-GAME CD????And it works GREAT!!!
What do you think about the program called EVEREST..is it possible to install on WINDOWS 98SE(if yes wich version?) and could that be a help???
Would it be any use uninstal the UPGRADE I did from WIN98 to WIN98SE and REINSTALL it or would that mess up the sistem?Doing this would I loose programs and deviceinstallations I did after the UPGRADE???Would there be a small possibility of getting back the sound if I do this?
I don't have an ENTIRE WIN98SE CD version so I can't format an REINSTALL all...
I am fixing up my oldest pc as a learning machine for my children

Boot into your BIOS screens (setup) and look for a setting called Plug & Play aware OS. It should be enabled. Also look for a setting to reserve resources for legacy devices. Your sound appears to be an ISA device, which IS a legusy bus device. I believe that there is an intermediate layer of software that allows the device to work in the Windows environment where resources are shared.
Back in the ISA day all hardware had exclusive use of resources (IRQs). With the advent of more hardware than available IRQs, something had to be done. The solution is sharing. That may be a root of the problem. I think the reason your sound chip is not showing in Device Manager is because of the intermediate software layer acting a buffer for the ISA device.
I might be all wet about this but you do have an ISA sound device according the the specs on your laptop. The laptop was designed to run older OSes then even Win98.

It's possible the game cd is running in dos and therefore bypassing any problems windows is having.
On the item that says 'no file is asked for. . .' choose to install/update that driver. When it asks where to look, browse to the folder containing the extracted sp9270. You have to go to the exact folder and subfolder because windows will only look in the folder you specify.
If that doesn't fix it, a little less drastic thing to try besides a format and reinstall is to run REGEDIT and open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and delete ENUM. That will remove all registry references to the hardware. When you reboot ALL drivers will need to be reinstalled.
Often this is done when putting a different motherboard with an existing 98 installation. Before doing that it's best to copy the contents of the WIN98 folder on your 98 cd to a similarly named folder on the hard drive. Check my #2 here for a better description:
http://www.computing.net/answers/ha...
The person there had ME but the process is the same for 98.
Deleting ENUM should be a last resort. Afterwards you may need to reinstall the network software or at least reconfigure it as it's port settings may have changed. If you do it it's probably best to download all the available drivers on the HP site first as they will not be on the 98 cd.

On computer is written DESIGNED FOR WINDOWS NT or WINDOWS98....I will try again with upgrade of the driver but I think I allready tried that way too and it kept on saying that I've got the best driver allready and it doesn't want to pick up anything...
If the soundcard was BROKEN would the CD-game be able to make sound???
(Your are speking about so complicated things wich I've absolutely no idea about...)
HOW do I boot into BIOS on win98SE???
I am fixing up my oldest pc as a learning machine for my children

You have to direct it to the exact folder that has the drivers otherwise it always says it has the best driver.
Tapping F10 when the laptop is posting the memory--when you first turn it on--should get you into cmos/bios setup.

Ok..thanks!!!I'll try both!!!I also found an article about the famous missing vxd files and it said to put them into both c\windows\system and c\windows\system\vmm32 to fix a lot of win98 bugs...so I will try this too as I just brought the vxd files to c\windows\system....I am fixing up my oldest pc as a learning machine for my children

I will do!!!I've worked for so long time with this pc so If I can get the sound on it too I would be very happy..if not at least I've tried all....
Have to ask you another thing..
I do have one RED X in DEVICE MANAGER but it has been there from the start and I don't think it's important...but you never know...maybe I can remove that device?
It's a CONTROLLER SCSI(don't know well what it's for)and It's called LOMEGA(or IOMEGA not sure)PARALELL PORT ZIP INTERFACE...should I try to reopen it or remove it?I also have abour 10 different devices with same probelem as the control interface of audio...if you open their driversinf it says that no driverfile is asked for or installed for this device...(BUT everything else is working...)
I am fixing up my oldest pc as a learning machine for my children

"I also have abour 10 different devices with same probelem as the control interface of audio"
Explain the above from you.
Do you have a Zip drive installed in your computer? Do you have a floppy drive installed?

I don't know if there's a zipdrive installed or even what that is for...
This was my husbands professional computer from office ones and the IOMEGA program or drive was allready there...
YES theres a FLOPPY drive and it works well...I made a floppybackup with it..
I am fixing up my oldest pc as a learning machine for my children

Are there any removable drive bays in the Laptop? That means you could swap out on type of drive and replace with another type. I suspect that may be the source of the red X. Click on the link below for an explanation on ZIP drives.

Hi..ok...I still don't know if this IOMEGA is used or needed on my pc or if it could CREATE PROBLEMS on other devices if not working...don't know if i should try to upgrade it to make it work or if it's better leave it with red cross?
The PC worked before on internet with wire and a XIRCOM CREDIT CARD MODEM(56)
As the drivers from Compaq site did not make anything work I tried with another version of driver i found(ESS 1869 PnP Audiodrive version 4.04.00.1317 from 9-16-1998 and this driver makes the microphone work and I can here my voice coming out from speaker if I speak in the microphone(is this a good sign?)...but windows and internet still does not make any sounds...and I still have all GREY in CONTROLPANEL-MULTIMEDIA
I also get up DRIVERS VOICES now in device managers ES 1869 CONTROL INTERFACE(drivers information) were before I had no voices(it says: C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ES 1869.VXD and C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MMDEVLDR.VXD)and in PLUG and PLAY device I get 5 files instead of 3 of before...they're all in C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and are named:
ES 1869.VXD-MMDEVLDR.VXD-ESSMPU.DVR-ESFM.DRV-ES 1869.DRV
As you can see 2 files are the same as under CONTROL INTERFACE and the other 3 are new.Do you think that the 3 different ones should be seen also under CONTROL INTERFACE??? but as they're all under WINDOWS\SYSTEM they should be automatical used if needed???Also installing this new driver I got a yellow ESCLAMATION POINT in a NETWORKDRIVER..
SHARED INTERNET CONNECTION'S says Impossible to use the driver for this device NDIS.VXD(Code2)Maybe this means that there's a conflict between the shared internet connection and the audiodevice???
Should I take away the SHARED INTERNET CONNECTION driver from device manager or should I try to restore it???
I also so that from CONTROL PANEL and ADD/REMOVE/WINDOWS DEVICES the square for SHARED INTERNET CONNECTIONS is NOT CHECKED anymore...BUT INTERNET IS WORKING FINE
Any suggestions????

The iomega entry shouldn't be causing a problem. It's possible though that removing it will free up resources the network or audio could use. Look in add/remove programs and see if it's there. If not, just deleting it from device manager may be all you need to do.

Why do you not answer all questions and try all suggestions. I posted twice about BIOS settings and yet you still haven't stated if you tried that or not.
If you are having problems with resource sharing that sure is an indication that the OS (Windows) is NOT controlling them. That is what the plug & play aware OS post is about.
The way you are going about things you are creating NEW problems.

Hi!!I don't think I created any problems...This is difficult for me as they're check ups I never did before...
So I entered BIOS settings and this is the result:

That is not the BIOS. That is the resource screen from Device Manager in WinXP. The BIOS is not part of Windows. You need to enter the BIOS BEFORE the computer boots into Windows.
Click on the link below for a link to the PDF file of your manual. You can save it to your computer. You will need a PDF reader program like Adobe Reader. If you don't have that then click on the second link below to get Adobe Reader.
In the meantime, Chapter 10 of the manual will clarify why you have sound when using a CD but not other times.

Hi!!!How did you find that...its my computer exactly and I could read it very good thru the Adobe reader 6 that I installed on the old pc a while ago...Its very good with this manual because I did not have any kind of paperworks with this pc
I still did not manage to boot into BIOS,if it was not bios I had up before...
I keep on tapping F10 at booting and this is what I get up...(maybe it doesn-t work because pc is upgraded to WIN98SE....)But what i found said that sound was enabled...
Tapping F10 at boot I get up as follow:
WELCOME to COMPAQ UTILITIES
(To change or test your computers options)Next page:
COMPAQ UTILITIES
Computer Setup
Computer Checkup(test)
view system informatio
Create a diagnostics diskette
manage diagnostics partition
I really don't know how or what to do...?I am fixing up my oldest pc as a learning machine for my children

"Computer Setup" should be where the hardware is configured. I assume the manual will have information on that too.

You may not need to enter the BIOS at all. Did you read chapter 10? There is mention of sound from a CD versus other sources.
You may simply have settings set wrong. Laptops are a different animal that I don't have much experience with.
Refer back to #17. I think DAVINCAPS was onto the solution there. Between the manual and that response you should be able to find the wrong setting.
BTW, I suggest you download ALL the manuals and drivers for that laptop. They may not be available next time you look for them. HP has a habit of pulling old stuff off their servers. Burn it all to disk.

Hi..I did write an answer to latest post
but someone deleted it...???anyway..I still did not get my sound..I believe i tried them all..
I noticed that I can play a music CD and I can listen to RADIO by web...but no sound in windows or online games...Would you just answer my question about which K lite codec version install in WIN98SE...as the website says that the version you sent a link about is for newer sistems...
I also would like to know about which is the latest MEDIAPLAYER and REALPLAYER that I can install in this sistem...
I am fixing up my oldest pc as a learning machine for my children

Found them!!!If i install the Microsoft codecs included in windows should I take just one or all four...
Same with the videocodecs...one or more?
I run windows update and installed Media player 9,0 and managed to see a video WITH SOUND!!!But still no sound in windows,no sound icon, its gone, and panelcontrol, multimedia empty...
