No Sounds in Win98se

I've just formatted my PC and re-installed Win98se (start from scratch, because of low performance). I've installed all required drivers and everything looks fine at the Device Manager, including my SiS 7018 on board sound card. The only problem is that I have no sounds at all: no windows sounds, cant play wav files (they just doesnt work), winamp and any other audio related program does not open, hangs, or give errors. Windows Media says "audio hardware is not available" (Error=80040256)

All I can tell is that my sound card is absent in Control Panel-->Multimedia, and although it seems to be properly configured at the Device Manager, the programs are not recognising it.

This is not the first time I have this problem. It happened to me the first time I formatted all disks (this is the 2nd one), but I cant remember how I solved it. Seems to be a configuration issue, I know the DRIVERS ARE OK, I've installed, deleted and re-installed latest version and the ones who cames with the Mother CD (chipset SiS 630)

thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english

There has to be drivers for your onboard sound on that disk as well for your motherboard.

Thanks all. Yes, I've installed all drivers from the motherboards CD

Cristopher, if you mean the volume controller it does not open, like most programs that use the sound card

It is like if there is no sound card, but as you can see in this screenshot, it is properly installed, and so its drivers

If none of the troubleshoots have helped, try this:

1.Open Registry Editor

a.Click Start>Run
b.In Open: box, type REGEDIT>OK

2.Backup Registry Files

a.Click Registry>Export Registry File…
b.Click the down arrowhead of Save in: box ,and click Desktop from the drop-down box, if Desktop is not already in Save in:
c.Type a name in the File name: box [Example: Reg102803]
d.Under Export range, click the circle of (.) All
e.Click Save button.

If any mistakes are made during Registry Editing or the editing does not solve the problem, you can Restore the Registry to the prior status by just clicking the Reg102803 file saved on Desktop. The backed up file will merge with the Registry and Restore it to the previous state. You can also Import Registry File… by reversing the steps through Registry Editor by Registry> Import Registry File…> Navigate to Desktop> Reg102803 and then click the Open button.

3.Locate and Edit the missing or damaged Registry keys: [Add the missing key]

a.Look for the following Registry Keys: by clicking the + by the left side of the Hive or Major key (Yellow Envelope icon), the keys and sub-keys one after the other, serially, until the second .Default key is reached in the Left Panel of the divided window. [ Right panel shows Values] If you first click the key and then the + you can see the Status bar at the bottom of Registry Editor window displaying the opening of the keys as shown below:.
-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\.Default

b.If the key is not seen EXACTLY as shown above, you need to Add the key by:
1.Double-click the registry list to which you want to add a new key, and then click the key above the location you want for the new key.
2.On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
3.Type the name for the new key, and then press ENTER
Once the key is added the whole string must look EXACTLY as shown.
4. Check the Multimedia and Sound

If this does not solve your problem RESTORE the REGISTRY as explained.
Hope this helps.

If you have already Enabled your Onboard Sound in the BIOS Setup and still have the problem, my only suggestion is buying a new PCI sound card, install and Disable the Onboard Sound through the BIOS Setup and then Install the drivers using the enclosed Driver CD.

Try this:
Boot into Safe Mode and remove Multimedia from Windows Setup as follows: (Note: you may need the Windows 98SE installation CD)

-Go to: Start>Settings>Control Panel, 2x clk: Add/Remove Programs.
-Choose the Windows Setup Tab.
-In the list of installed components uncheck Multimedia.
-Click Apply, OK, close Control Panel.

Next, remove media resources entries from the Registry. Back up Registry first!!!
-Start>Run, key in: Regedit
-Expand to: Hkey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\
Control\MediaResources
-Under this key, click once on the yellow folder before: Aux
-Press Delete on the keyboard
-Click: Yes to confirm key delete
Do the same for the following folders: Midi, Mixer, and Wave.

Next, remove any sound driver remnants:
-Right click: My Computer, choose Properties
-Click on Device Manger tab
-Click on: (+) Sound, Video, and Game Controllers to expand
-Remove all sound related items under this category by selecting the desired item and clicking: Remove
Once all items are removed, Sound, Video, and Game Controllers no longer appears in the list.

Now, reboot, and reinstall the Sound Card Drivers.
(As Windows reboots it redetects the sound card and partially reinstalls multimedia components.)

Next, reinstall the Multimedia component as follows:
-Start>Settings>Control Panel, 2x clk: Add/Remove Programs
-Choose: Windows Setup tab
-In the list of installed components check Multimedia, click: Apply, OK, and close Control Panel.

Check your Sound.
Post back.
