In Safe Mode, look in My Computer/Device Manager to see if there are any yellow or red marks.

Might want to reinstall the driver for the sound card and video card. Fatal exception errors may occur when the PC tries to use an improperly installed component.

Download a utility like BelArc Advisor or AIDA32. One of them will tell you most of what you need to know.

Also, if you have DirectX, go to Start>Run, and key in: DXDIAG

If the DiectX Diagnostic Tool shows up, go to the Sound tab and check things out.

Its a Quantex

I think it is to do with Direct X, when I tried doing the Start>Run, and key in: DXDIAG thing I got a blue screen error. Also on AIDA32 when I do a report when it gets to Direct X Sound I get an error, this also happens when I click Direct X Sound in AIDA32. So i think DIrect X is the problem

Your PC is a Quantex, but need to know the model and/or number.

In my opinion, since you are getting Fatal Exception errors, would bet on problems with the video card or sound card driver vs. just DirectX.

DirectX is a set of Microsoft improved performance multimedia programming interfaces that provide access to the hardware on the PC.

Try the following to check out the video card:
-Right click My Computer, select Properties from the drop menu.
-A System Properties dialogue box shows up.
-Select the Performance tab
-Select the Graphics button.
-In Advanced Graphics Settings dialogue box, take the Hardware Acceleration slider down to None.
-Click OK, and close out of everything.
-Restart the computer.

If disabling Hardware Acceleration (to None)causes the computer to restart in Safe mode, move the Hardware Acceleration slider up one notch at a time until functionality is restored.

If disabling hardware acceleration works, there is most likely a problem with your display driver. If that is the case, an updated, DirectX compatible display driver is needed.

Which takes us back to needing info on what type of hardware is installed (video card and sound card).

Look in the back of the computer. Is there a tag there with a model number, etc.?

Did you find out the type of video card and sound card you have installed using BelArc Advisor or AIDA32?

The AIDA32 program should give you some info on the kind of sound card you have. If not, go to your Desktop, right click the My Computer icon, select Properties from the drop menu, and then go to Device Manager. Under Sound, Video and Game Controllers, what brand does it identify?

Also post the info on the chipset for the Crystal sound card.

In the download there was a .txt file in it it says this

----------------------
1. Driver Kit Files
----------------------
The driver kit consists of the following 3 files :

CWAWDM INF 14,532 06-18-99 4:19p
CWAWDM SYS 58,520 05-20-99 2:44p
PUSW4000 CAT 5,371 06-18-99 4:20p

----------------------
2. Installing Crystal Audio Drivers
----------------------
1. Open Device Manager.

2. PCI Multimedia Device will have a yellow marker the first time
the operating system is installed.

3. Select "Properties" on the yellow marker.

4. Select the "Driver" tab.

5. Click on "Update Driver"

6. You will need the Windows Second Edition to complete the WDM
installation.

7. The entry that will show up in the Sound, Video, and Game Controllers
is: Crystal WDM Audio Codec.

8. A little Sound Icon appears on the Task Bar upon completing the
driver installation.

----------------------
3. Uninstalling/Re-Installing Crystal Audio Drivers
----------------------
1. Open Device Manager.

2. Remove Crystal WDM Audio Codec entry in the Sound, Video, and Game
Controllers section. Crystal is not the owner of the game controller
on this audio solution.

3. Delete Crystal INF in c:\windows\inf\other

4. Restart your PC for Plug and Play to happen again.

I dont really understand this.
Could you help

And what I did was
Right Click My Computer
Go Properties
Find the driver.
Went properties
Update Driver
Found the folder I downloaded
Then it was installing then said there was an error.
Error Code : 69

Should I try uninstalling the driver then installing it again?

If a zipped file with the sound card driver was downloaded, it needs to be extracted before the sound card can use it as a driver.

To make a clean install of the sound card, remove any remnants of it in My Computer/Device Manager. It is best to start the PC in Safe Mode (tap F8 as the PC starts and select Safe Mode from the menu that appears) and look under the (+) Sound, Video and Game Controllers area to remove any sound card related entries, and then reboot.

Upon reboot, Windows attempts to install the driver software for the sound card. Since the driver was downloaded, click the Have Disk button.

Windows then prompts for the location of the driver. Click the Browse button, and direct Windows to the folder where the sound card driver was extracted.

The driver should then be found and installed.

To make sure Windows has recognized the sound card, go back to Device Manager and click on the (+) Sound, Video and Game Controllers to see a listing of the audio devices. If there is a yellow exclamation mark to the right of any of these devices the device is not working properly.

Next, go to Start>Settings>Control Panel, and double click the Multimedia icon. The Multimedia Properties dialogue frame shows up. In the Audio tab, check: 'Show Volume Control on the Taskbar'. In the Playback and the Recording area, the Preferred Device should be showing the name of the sound card. Click Apply and then OK, the speaker icon should now show up on the Taskbar.

Error 69 could be anything. No clue.

Getting your sound back is the purpose of all this, but it is not exactly easy to do just using a crystal ball!!

Did you ever download BelArc Advisor and check under Multimedia to make sure what kind of sound card you have? That would help us confirm that it is Crystal.

AIDA32 would give information also under Multimedia>Windows Audio, and PCI/PnP Audio.

Once there is some confirmation, might try another driver from the same website in response #21 above.

You also mentioned, at some point, about trying to play a video clip. What program do you use to play your video clip?

Might want to do a new post and see if some fresh minds help you with this,
but you might as well have more specific info as to the audio card, etc.

Under Multimedia>Windows Audio, and PCI/PnP Audio. It says
Intel 82801AA I/O Controller Hub - AC'97 Audio Adapter PCI

I play video clips on both media player and real player but they didnt work on either. I uninstalled real player and installed Winamp and the same still happens.

I will try and get back on here soon and reply to your next post but im goin on holiday for 2 weeks tonite so it could be quite hard.
