Comment:

I have a CD-RW drive in my Windows 98 computer and I tried burning files/music to several CD-R's and everytime I attempt to copy them over, I get a "no recording devices present" error. I have Roxio easy CD creator 5 platinum and Nero Burning ROM (version 5) installed, I even installed Windows media player 7 (that is my version of choice) and I made sure to install the recorder plugins but it still didn't work. I got this computer second hand about a month ago and I don't have the Nero or Roxio install disks/files.

The drive shows up as Drive D:\ in My computer and it's set up correctly in the BIOS as CD-W58E as Primary IDE slave. I also have a CD-ROM drive as well as Drive E:\. The CD-RW drive WILL read CD-R's that I already made on other machines but will NOT record new items.

Can I download them (the drivers/programs) somewhere or what can I do?

Thanks,
Faris,

I'm a little confused when you say 'attempt to copy them over'. Just to make sure, you run either Roxio or Nero, identify the files you want copied but when you attempt the burn you get the 'no recording devices present'?

If so, uninstall both Roxio and Nero and reinstall only one of them--preferably Nero. Burner software are loners and often don't coexist well with other brands.

It's also possible the software can't see the recorder. Older version often need to be updated to see newer recorders. Did either the Roxio or Nero originally come with the drive? If so it should work OK with it.

Oh yeah, you don't have the installation disks. I'd still suggest uninstalling one of them. It'd be a good idea to buy your own burner software. Or there are some places where you can download older versions that may work.

Well, I opened up the tower, the CD-RW drive was made in November 2000. Not that old, I guess.
Yes, that's it exactly, when I have the files ready to copy and I attempt it I get the no recording devices present error.

As I said above, I don't know if Roxio or Nero originally came with the computer as I got it second hand about a month ago.

I'll try those download links tomorrow and write back. It's late now.

plainandsimple, what does the last link have to do with my issue? It's a Desktop PC, not a laptop and I don't think it has those type of swappable drives.
Thanks,
Faris,

Well, I uninstalled Roxio and Now Nero doesn't give me the "no recording devices present" error, but every time I try to burn a CD, the whole thing freezes up every time. Should I reinstall Nero from one of the links above?
Should I install the same version of Nero (Version 5.0) or try a higher version this time if needed be?
Thanks,
Faris,

I'd uninstall nero and reninstall. I'd think 5.0 would work OK but it shouldn't hurt to install a newer version.
