If what I understand from your post is correct, you are looking to install windows, but do not have the windows install CD. But your computer has a CD ROM Drive.
Correct?

If thats the case, you need to get a windows CD from somewhere (beg, borrow, steal - though ALL of those are illegal) OR get windows installable files copied onto a hard drive and connect it to your hard drive which is a tedious process and again illegal (you may ask, so what? well...am with you :D )

Post back and let us know what you can / want to do and we will help you out.

Which OS are you trying to install? Win95 and Win98 first edition CDs are not bootable. You can go to www.bootdisk.com and download a file that will create a bootable floppy. If your cdrom drive is mot ancient, you, with that floppy, you can access the cdrom drive and run the `setup' program on it.

Boot with the bootdisk and pay attention to what appears on the screen as the drivers are loading. The last few lines should tell you what drive letter your cdrom is.

The Win98SE CD should be bootable. Maybe it's defective.

The 'cd found cd-55' is the bios telling you it's found a cdrom. That has nothing to do with what drive letter an operating system will give it.

After this posting screen, when you're actually booting from the bootdisk, is the information that will tell you the drive letter.

Teac makes a cd-55 cdrom. If that's what you have it's only a 4X.

If you're booting from a standard 98 floppy bootdisk and choosing 'cdrom support' then the last few lines to load will say something like:

MSCDEX Version 2.25
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp. . .
Drive D: = Driver OEMCD001 unit 0

A:\>

In the example above, D: is the cdrom drive letter. If that's not what you're getting then what exactly is showing up on the screen?

I'll check back tomorrow. It's 4:15 AM here.

DAVEINCAPS hi again and thx once more for ur replay,

i boot with Win98 floppy bootdisk thats true but how can i choos 'cdrom support'. In my BIOS i dunn have such an option.

I realised that i can't boot with Windows 98 SE. Everytime is says FAILED. When tried the same with Win XP than everythink was OK.So i think i should find other Win 98 SE.

Choosing cdrom support is an option from the menu AFTER starting to boot from a bootdisk. It's not in the bios.

I really just need to know EXACTLY what the last few lines read on your screen are when booting from a bootdisk. It could be you need a better bootdisk. I came across this microsoft page:

CD-ROM DRIVES REQUIRING REAL-MODE DRIVERS

that indicates a Teac cd-55 needs proprietary drivers.

But first I need to know exactly what the last few lines on the screen are when booting from a bootdisk.

I'm glad you got it figured out. Some custom made bootdisks choose a particular letter for the cdrom. That's so it will always be a constant letter and not change due to the user having several IDE devices.

Once you install your OS, the cdrom letter should be d: again (or one letter higher than your highest hard drive partition letter).
