I have been running win 98 on an NEC for awhile.I did not use computer for about three months.Today when I tried starting computer I get a message no operating system found.Windows just does not load can you offer any suggestions to correct this problem. Thanks in advance.

Hi
Just checking before posting. I like Bill's response.
Anyhow keep this in mind if reseating doesn't sort it out.
When computer sits for a bit a number of things can happen to the hard drive.
One to look out for is the platters inside the hard drive become stuck. You really need the drive out on a level surface so you can listen carefully to the drve spin up (if it does) You may notice a few perculiar sounds instead.
You can unstick the drive sometimes. Take the free drive in hand, twisting the drive quickly back and forth (much like the action of quickly twisting a door knob but repeatedly)with your hand keeping the drive in the same plane [ ie twist it so the drive is level]
If it isn't that then I am sure other members of this forum will have some good suggestions.

If the machine has been sitting idle & unplugged for a long time, sometimes the CMOS battery gets discharged. Can you get to the BIOS at bootup? Is the clock correct? Are the hard drive(s) recognized?
If not, replace the battery.

Hi stewills471, bill, anenefan, DAVEINCAPS, hi everyone,I'm impressed by anenefan's method! ;-) better than my way which consists in kicking the computer?
Of course, I'm kidding here! I'll read suggestions with much interest!Have a good day,

I reseated hdd cables and got up to the desktop. No mouse detected,I then went into device manager and removed mouse.Shut down and restarted system no mouse again detected and no mouse listed in device manager. What can I do at this point. Thanks in advance

Make sure the PS/2 port is enabled in cmos if it's a PS/2 mouse. Make sure the com port is enabled in cmos if it's a serial mouse.

Hi,
I am still having some problems. My mouse is found sometimes when I start up other times it is missingI took it out using device manager and cannot put it back in the system. When I try to add it through add new hardware either I'm being asked for a installation disk or I get an IRQ conflict. How can I enable this ps\2 mouse.I think I need help .Thanks again.
stewills

If there's a possible IRQ conflict, go into cmos and make sure 'PnP OS' is enabled. This lets windows have more control over the hardware settings.
Otherwise it sounds like either the mouse connection or the mouse itself may be bad. You might want to try a new mouse.
Is the PS/2 port enabled in cmos? Or are you using a PS/2 serial port adapter? If so those don't work with all mice.

Hi,
I purchased a new mouse and the problems still continue.PnP is enabledCan someone tell me how to check to see if the ps/2 port is enabled. How is the mouse connection replaced?I am not using an adapter.Thanks.
stewills

Ps I forgot to mention;when I look at the IRQ's listed in my computer---IrQ #12 is not listed. When I tried reserving an IRQ I get IRQ coflicts. Can my situation be resolved?Help-------Thanks

I'm going to email you a dos bootdisk with a mouse driver and dos utility to see if it works. Run the file I send and it will create a bootdisk. Then boot the problem computer with it and the program will run.
If the problem is with IRQ's in windows then it should work OK in dos. If it doesn't work in dos then either the port isn't enabled in cmos or you've got a hardware problem with it.
I've got to run some errands so I may not get it to you until this afternoon.

The machine that's having problems with the ps/2 mouse has no internet access.I received the email with the attachment but could not utilize it.My problems continue.Help---help ----help

If you run the file I sent you on the computer on which you downloaded it, it will create a bootdisk that you can use on the mouse-less computer.

Hi,
I ran the file and copied the bootdisk onto a floppy.I then started the problem machine with this disk but in the final analysis when I booted up the machine again it still said no mouse present.

Hi,
I downloaded some mouse drivers onto a cd rom.How do I load them on my mouseless computer. Also if I have mouse drivers on a floppy how can I load them onto a mouseless computer.
P.S.I know they must be keyboarded in but I need the actual instructions to make it possible.Thanks.
stewills

If you booted with the disk I sent and the drivers on it didn't recognize the mouse then the problem is with the mouse, mouse connection, cmos recognition of the mouse port or perhaps some other hardware problem. Possibly you've got a mouse that generic drivers don't see. But that's unlikely. Otherwise, it's not a driver problem. So I don't think trying different drivers is going to help.
However, in general, if you have a mouse installation disk you would need to follow the instructions on the disk to install the drivers.
Dos mouse drivers are almost always loaded in autoexec.bat. Or you can run them from the command line. For example if you boot from the bootdisk I sent, typing:
mouse
at the a:\> prompt will load the dos mouse driver. I have that line in the autoexec.bat file on the bootdisk so it runs automatically.
Windows mouse drivers would need to be loaded either via the installation disk or in device manager as a driver update. But if the OS isn't seeing a mouse at all, an update wouldn't do any good.
You may want to get a serial mouse and connect it to one of the serial ports. As long as your OS is seeing a serial port it should see a mouse connectect to it.
