no operating system

I have been given a computer (its about 5 years old) the hard disk had been formatted to do a clean install of 98 but when I turned on it just says " operating system not found" and wont do anything at all, i have tried the boot disk option but it says " invalid system disk - replace disk and press any key" im not really to sure on what to do next......... It sounds like the boot disk may be bad. But make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the floppy first, although that's normally the default so probably not a problem. The Install boot floppy should give you choices when you boot it - -Install Windows -Start Windows with CD support -Start Windows without CD support
You obviously want "install windows."

well it runs from a: first so i tried a brand spanking disk with the download above but it still tells me that is an invalid system disk - replace and press any bloody key, i press the any key and its still abracadabra its still and invalid system disk......what next?????

Have you checked the boot order in the BIOS as suggested above? If the floppy drive is set as the first boot device, then maybe you need a new floppy drive.

go in the bios and change the boot sequence; it is done this way: start the computer -when the memory test is busy, press DEL -in the next menu choose BIOS FEATURES SETUP -go to BOOT SEQUENCE and press pagedown -choose A,C,SCSI -press ESCAPE -choose SAVE & EXIT SETUP and type Y

You have to execute the downloaded file to make the boot disk, it is not in itself a boot disk.
Have done all of the above and it still says invalid system disk.....i downloaded the ultimate boot disk then ran the exe and followed what it told me to do and it didnt work..... any ideas???

where is the floppy controller??and how can i test it?? I put in a different HDD and it booted up and everything tested fine. Im thinking that maybe the disk is beyond help............
