Hello,
I was missing the Multimedia control panel for quite a while, and so replaced the mmsys.cpl using sfc and the Win98 CD. The icon did not reappear after rebooting.
Clicking on mmsys.cpl still does nothing (except an hourglass pointer for 1/2 second), as before.
Booting into Safe Mode: no change.
I need to access this CPL because I am trying to do video capture, but the Device menu is missing from Media Player v.5, and so I am trying to troubleshoot the problem...Any ideas on how to get this control panel back?
Specs: Win 98SE on Thinkpad 760ED 133 / 48.
Thanks!
Paul

Hi Paul:
If you are sure that you've extracted the file into the C:\windows\system folder then you should be able to open it by going to Start>Run> and typing control mmsys.cpl into the run box, making sure there is a single space between the two words.
You may want to check the C:\windows\control.ini file and see if it is listed under the [don't load] section. That could be why it is not showing.
This is just my opinion but with only 48 megs of ram and a 133 processor you aren't going to do much video editing.

Thanks for the reply!
When I do the Run mmsys.cpl, I get: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in My Computer by clicking View and the clicking Folder Options."
What do you mean by "...a single space?" 2-Clicking on mmsys.cpl doesn't do anything either.
Control.ini shows snd.cpl=no, joystick.cpl=no, midimap.drv=no, sticpl.cpl=no under Don't Load.
Thanks for the advice. I'm actually not trying to video edit, but just display video input from the 760ED's video-in port.
Any further help really appreciated!
Paul

Type in "control mmsys.cpl" but without the quotes.
Sorry about the late reply but we had unexpected guests drop in.

Hi Paul
Are you having trouble with any other of the CPL applets ?
Could be a dodgy control.exe file ( the file that opens the Control panel )
Try SFC to replace control.exeGood luck

Thanks for your reply, despite the guests.
Hopefully the guests were of the welcome type:)I tried as both of you suggested:
1) control mmsys.cpl : nothing happened.
I've replaced mmsys.cpl twice.2) Actually, I do have two other icons that don't work. But, Multimedia simply doesn't even appear. Replacing control.exe resulted in no change:(
I know, I know, there's probably no hope but to reinstall Windows... but I only have a Win98 CD, whereas the OS is 98SE (no disk), so it won't let me install on top of it.
Paul

Don't give up yet, Let's try this.
Go to Start>Run and this time type in "rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL mmsys.cpl,,4" without the quotes. Leave a blank space after exe and another one before mmsys.

Hi Herb,
Even if nothing works, thanks for all your help. When running this command (no idea what it does!), there is no error, but no change that I can tell (after a restart).
I know that at one point I had Multimedia Properties. It may have vanished after I used a DirectX uninstaller a long time ago; a needed process since my Thinkpad 760ED was completely screwed up by the irreversible DirectX 7, I think it was.
Thanks,
Paul

I'm out of ideas here Paul, sorry I couldn't help you sort this out. Good luck on whatever else you try.
