no mouse unless I'm n safe mode

Comment:
My mouse will not work unless I'm in safe mode. When I click on the performance tab it says A and C are running in real mode. How do I get out of real mode and is this the reason for my mouse not working. Also, my system restore is disabled and every time I try to uncheck "disable system restore", I reboot and it just goes right back to being checked so I can't use system restore

Go to System Properties (Right click on My Computer and then go down to Properties which will bring you to the device manager) Once you are there find and click on the "+" sign where the mouse is. click on the mouse and then on the botton of the screen click on "Remove". Close out of that and restart your computer. It should be fine after that.
Good Luck !!!

If your bought your mouse not with your computer it should have a driver disk. i would reinstall the driver from this disk.

I unchecked everything in the startup tab and restarted. No help. Still no mouse. I can't understand because when I boot in safe mode I have a working mouse.

Check autoexec.bat and config.sys files for any entries relating to the mouse

Actually just curious if maybe you have a mouse driver loading in there.
Something else to try if not yet is to check for spyware:

It's in real mode because you're in safe mode. That's not related to your mouse problem.
Assuming ME is like 98 in this respect, open system.ini and look under the [Boot] section. What does the 'mouse.drv=' line read?

Real mode means it is loading DOS drivers. There may be something loading in autoexec.bat or config.sys files. You could rename those files to something such as autoexec.old and config.old

When in safe mode your drives are always in real mode/msdos compatibility mode. Since you said you 'clicked' on performance to find them in real mode, you must have been in safe mode when you did it because that's when your mouse works.
Don't worry about the real mode thing, it's not a factor.
