Comment:

I was just given this computer But every time I turn it on, It keeps coming up "NO mouse detected". It gives me the option to ad one now but each time it still doesn't detect it. It has a serial port for the mouse. I've tried both types, serial mouse & Ps2 mouse with the adapter but still no luck. It does have USB ports but I don't have a USB mouse to try it. In device manager it doesn't show any mouse. any suggestions would great, thanks Maxx.

Check the backing plate around the port to make sure the mouse is not grounding out or unable to make contact. The plate is fairly soft and can be bent easily. Also check the pins.

Enter the BIOS screens to see if the Serial ports are enabled.

You might check the BIOS and ensure that PS2 is enabled (or that your COM port isn't disabled).

You should probably try an actual PS2 mouse, as that adapter may not work with your particular mouse

I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

And try a 'real' serial mouse, those adapters are notoriously unreliable.

I've had that problem before. Check to see if your internal mouse is connected to COM2, if it is remove it and then connect your serial mouse and it should detect it.

A conclusion is the place where you get tired of thinking.

Hav you tried using a different type of mouse? If there is a hardware problem, reinstalling the OS isn't going to fix it. Reread response #4.

No, I didn't figure it would but that was my whole reason for getting a mouse to work on this pc, so I could reformat it.
I've tried several different mouses now but still no luck getting any to work.?

Have you tried a true serial mouse? This will have a connector that mates to the serial ports on the back of the case. Did you enter the BIOS and be sure the Serial (Com ports) are both enabled?

Possibly the oddest reason for formatting I've ever seen.

Never did report back on what's shown in the BIOS - and you appear to have plunged ahead with the format anyways - apparently with little success there either

Yes I did plunge ahead as you say because my whole intention in the first place was to reformat this pc because it was given to me due to needing it. It was all messed up, So former owners just went out & bought a new one & were trashing this one.
So you see, I wasn't doing the format for the mouse reasons. The mouse defect was only 1 of several problems. I did get everything else running quite smoothly...But Not that darn mouse. I was told that the mouse connection might have a "Ground" problem. Anyone know how I might check this.??

Thanks for all your helpful posts.
Maxx.

You have One PS2 port and 2 serial ports, plus you may have USB ports. The only port we know is bad for sure is the PS2. You have the serial ports. Just get a serial mouse or a USB mouse if you have USB ports.
