no LAN board found help!!!

i recently reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows 98. however when i tried to reinstall the drivers for my ethernet card, i got an error message: no LAN board found on your system. i connected my ethernet card to the cable modem and the lights on both are working fine. my ethernet card is a SMC EZ Card 10/100 (SMC1211TX). please help!!!!!

Some PCI LAN cards require the software be installed before the PCI card. I know that 3Com works this way. I shut down the computer and remove the card, reboot and install the drivers and then shutdown again and reinstall the PCI card. Reboot and Plug and Play should detect the LAN as new hardware and allow you to use the drivers. In some hard cases you have to try installing the card in another PCI slot to get things to work.
